I need to get some heavy duty thick blade grass for the summer - but not wanting to re-turf at this stage..

Anyone got any advice with this???

Your problem may not be the grass, but another factor.

Is you ground compacted and hard in these areas?

If so you may need to loosen the soil in these areas to allow the grass to roots to establish themselves. Stick fork in about 4 - 6 inches, then pull back to lift the ground slightly, but without actually breaking the surface. Scour the surface well before putting down the seeds. Sand down the holes can also help.
A picture of the problem areas may help people give suggestions.

I have this problem too, the damn sycamore seedlings have had no trouble in establishing themselves. Got about 100 of the blighters

Sycamore seedlings!
They start sprouting on our concrete!
This would be a good discussion on the gardening thread. I myself have a Hawthorn tree that is giving my grass a hard time with the shade it throws. Moss is taking over.

Well... Last summer I levelled the garden and put around 3 quaters on a ton of top soil down with sharpe sand.

Was looking at the garden today, and think i need to turn the soil over a bit and get more seed down...

All comes down to which seed!

I've spent about £40-£50 on seeds and fertilisers, I reckon it would have been cheaper and quicker to just turf it. 2nd year and it's still not how I want it.
