Congratulations to Cressida Dick.

Another brilliant signal for all our young female relatives. Almost anything is now achievable in British society. If you are talented and experienced, there should now be no gender-based reason why you cannot rise to the very top of your chosen profession. This is an important time in the progression towards full equality in the Public sector. The Private sector is still evolving, and has some way to go. Hopefully a few more senior female C.E.O's will be appointed on merit in the next few years.

UK Prime Minister

UK Home Secretary

Metropolitan Police Commissioner

Head of State

Scottish First Minister

German Chancellor

All female - what a great message this sends out with strong and successful female role-models for our younger generation. The Labour Party may even elect its first female leader after 117 years.

Great news. But what about Scotland?

reading into this she was in charge of the shooting of the innocent guy at the train station:
Former Assistant Commissioner Dick was in charge of the anti-terror operation where an innocent man was shot dead on a Tube train in 2005.

That was a well-known fact before her appointment, Jack. Hopefully we don't have a system rewarding mere time-servers who have never put their neck on the line. I am sure she didn't choose to be in charge of that operation the day after 52 people were killed, and over 700 injured on the Tube network, and I am certain she did not wish for the eventual outcome. An enquiry found that she was not culpable for the actions taken on the ground that day anyway. We should celebrate her achievement, not seek to undermine her in my opinion.

so presumably she was in charge of the four terrorist bombers arrested the day before.

may be wrong but the ones that killed everyone were 2 weeks before, the bombers who failed were the day before. all in all a very tense time for police in the capital.

I think you are correct, shadey. But as you say, it happened in London during July 2005, so the sentiment of my comment remains valid, in my opinion.

exactly if not more so, the first bombers blew themselves up.
the bombers who got away were the day before the shooting, so if she was in charge more credit to her.
it would seem she has experience, rather than just being a woman.

I would like to see police commissioners elected rather than appointed by a group of people who are not accountable to the taxpaying public. This would overcome any possibility of lack of accountability and the public would have no grounds for complaint if the elected individual failed to perform.

Ha! They're very good at hiding their true colours, but occasionally the mask slips.

Thankfully the working class are beginning to catch on that Labour aren't really all about empowering them either.

It took the Conservative party 145 years so I imagine it will happen with labour and then what, it will prove Labour is more inclusive?

What is the point of this thread anyway, is it baiting? etc. etc.

Typical Tory double standards ;)

You'll have to take it as you perceive it, Rom - I won't change your mind. For me, I think it is great news for all the reasons described above.

that really does sound like your a bit sore from your very obvious baiting thread that was removed the other day. how can this thread possibly be baiting?
I can usually see if something is baiting or controversial, I just can't see it apart from someone mentioning the the obviously tragic shooting the day after the failed bombings.
I personally didn't know about this promotion. my cousin is a serving policewoman in Yorkshires finest, I dare say she would think this is good for the forces in the UK.

Oh don't get me wrong I think it's great news, just didn't really get the dig at end considering all the snivelling there was over my thread the other day :)

Not sure what you see as a dig, just stating a series of facts and a few hopes for the future. You'll have to clarify the 'snivelling' as well. Sorry, Rom.

The last sentence Shadey, c'mon I know you're not slow that slow on the uptake. I'm not sore about it or I'd argue the toss until the thread descends into bickering and gets cut, that seem to be the tactic. All good in the hood my man 8)

I heard that she had retired already and was asked to consider this post, with lots or equally competent policepersons, so I think her job scope is going for broke of M,M,M, as her promotion of back to retirement anyway, got nothing to lose.
