Evening all :)

At the moment myself and my partner are buying meals from the supermarket for the night on the way home - it seems to be costing a small fortune. What foodstuffs can I buy which are cheap yet still nutritious (and tasty of course!)?

The big downside is that we live in an apartment which doesn't have a decent freezer, just a 2 star ice box jobby at the top of our fridge. We forever seem to be chucking wasted veg, fruit, bread etc away.

Any tips? Thanks in advance :)

Buy a freezer and batch cook, save you oodles and oodles of dosh!!!

A bit confused here but it might just be me ( as I am tired )

But why don't you go the grocery and buy things with longer sell by dates, that way you won't have to go to the shops every night?

Or buy a freezer :-D

pasta and rice....call in on the way home and get things to go with it (meat veg sauces etc)....:) job done

well buy a freezer and should go to your local market to pick some good, fresh and cheap meat and cook,

Room is an issue unfortunately, as is finding the money to buy a new freezer lol.

We do try and buy things with longer sell by dates, like pasta/rice etc. We love meat though, so tend to have it every night lol. Problem is we can't store it well after cooking it.

There must be tonnes of recipes out there that combine cheap ingredients with long sell by dates but we're blind to it, I must cook the same three/four meals every week :oops:

Ahh good call, I haven't had that for ages! :thumbsup:

I remember way back my nans partner used to make a lovely salsa type stew with cous cous. It was an Indonesian dish of some kind... I'll have a search :)

Tinned fish, salmon, tuna, mackerel

Tinned creamy soups, good on their own or for a base for sauces over pasta and rice. Creamed mushroom, diced cooked chicken........serve with rice or pasta, simples!!!

Those frozen veg packs aren't too bulky and should fit in your freezer compartment

I love fish however my partner doesn't (very annoying when it's me doing all the cooking!). The soup as a base sounds interesting, might have to experiment with that a little :)

We've been quite lucky on veg lately, been getting the reduced ready prepared packs - ideal if you're eating them on the same night, cheap as chips :thumbsup:

what sort of things are you buying on a typical visit?

if you have the time and energy to cook after work the one thing that you must do, is to make sure you are well stocked on,
sauces,herbs and spices,
good selection of vegetables,
pastas, rices,cous cous, noodles and pulses.

after that your trip to the supermarket can be as cheap as you like.if you have the basis of a meal already at home you can jazz up any dish.
will a little fresh chilli or ginger, fresh prawns or some meat that is on offer.

you need to plan more, this can be done by getting ideas from recipe books,
when you shop you must think about whats already in your fridge, wasting food is a crime in my book.

prepared packs are not the best choice, even if they are reduced, if you buy fresh veg, its more versatile, veg for tonights dinner, tomorrows stew, shredded with some noodles.

also try making your own sauces, pasta, curry or chilli, its all very easy if you have the right ingredients, works out so much more cheaper and tastier.

Quorn chicken or mince put it in your ice cube compartment or will keep a few days in the fridge then use it when needed with pasta or make gravy and have it with tinned potatoes, instant mash or fresh veg.:)

cook stuff and freeze it before it goes off...
