Ok i got this phrase/ideal last night in my head

and im trying to think what its called describing life as that another one is e.g
your life is like an iceberg slowly melting away and when its gone you die

What is that called rep for anyone who gets it - as i know what it is but its lodged in my brain i cant access

simile [sim‐ĭ‐li], an explicit comparison between two different things, actions, or feelings, using the words ‘as’ or ‘like’, as in Wordsworth's line:

I wandered lonely as a cloud

A very common figure of speech in both prose and verse, simile is more tentative and decorative than metaphor. A lengthy and more elaborate kind of simile, used as a digression in a narrative work, is the epic simile.

simile is more poetic compared to a metaphore

I have to disagree. Like I said, I believe "Analogy" is the word you are after.

its definitely NOT a metaphor!

It's a simile. saying something is "like" something else is a simile. it would have been a metaphor if you said something like:

His life is locked away from the world and every day puts another brick in the wall around himself from the outside world.
#14
I too say it is a simile. :)
#15
a metaphor is something like, whensomeone looks in a mirror thats a metaphor for fragmentaion of the mind and soul
#16
ie : :)

''His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances
like underpants in a tumble dryer.''
OR

''Her hair glistened in the rain like nose hair after a sneeze''

It's definitely a simile... saying something is 'like' something else, is a simile.

A metaphor is saying something IS something else, when it clearly isn't i.e. "I was over the moon"

Just looked - it seems that dandoc2 has made things awkward by posting an ambiguous sentence to begin with.

His life is locked away from the world and every day is like hes putting another brick in the wall around himself from the outside world

I think his meaning is something like:

His life is locked away from the world and every day [it feels] like he is putting another brick in the wall around himself from the outside world.

In which case, I would say it is not a simile. It's not strictly a metaphor either because he tells us what it is he is comparing, although 'brick' and 'wall' are used metaphorically. I don't think it is an analogy either as these are not two things which share common properties. If I had to choose between the three, I would say that dandoc2 is attempting to use metaphor.
#24
So its a simile but id call it a metaphor for something
#25
Basically it's more confusing than it's worth :)

At school I was taught that "a metaphor is an implied simile", which is great except that I could never remember what a simile was!:-D

EDIT: btw, hodsey77 is correct.

I still think it's tricky. I see the reasoning behind people saying it's a simile, but I also see why people say it ISN'T one and is more like an analogy!

every day is like hes putting another brick in the wall around himself from the outside world

This would be slightly more simile IMO, but what do I know?

every day is like putting another brick in the wall around himself from the outside world

Seeing as his life could actually be "locked away from the world". I would say simile.

But at the same time, there isn't anything wrong with combining a simile and a metaphor in a single sentence. A metaphoric simile, if you will.
#31
id say similie....deffinatly not a metaphor in my opinion....and an analogy is more like explaining something in a simplified, more comprehendable way?...thats what i always thought lol... and the sentence doesnt sound right to me anyway...lol....id say the following instead....but i imagine some genius wrote it?? lol

every day is like putting another brick in the wall locking himself from the outside world.....other words id maybe use is , protecting, sheltering.... but without it i think the sentence doesnt flow? lol

but hey i got a D in gcse english so what do i know lol

Btw i was watching Pink Floyd - The Wall when i came to this conundrum

His life is locked away from the world and every day is like hes putting another brick in the wall around himself from the outside world
In a real sentence of this form, you wouldn't write "like" but something along the lines of "as if" (he is putting another brick..). Definitely not a simile (although "as if" can be used to form a simile) IMO
