Grrrr....Vista Technical Help Please

Well,

A few months ago, my sisters laptop was taking ages to install updates (got stuck on 0% complete for about an hour) so i restarted it. Ever since, whenever you log in, enter password etc and click enter, it just says "welcome" with the loading orb icon. The only way you can log in is in safe mode, which has awful graphics etc

I have just tried repairing Vista with the "start up repair utility" twice, but both times it hasnt fixed the problem

She hasnt made any backups or restore points, so thats out of the window

I dont want to format it, as it has all her files on it. Any other options?

thanks!

Try running 'Chkdsk' in Safe mode.

You can look at the Windows Update history (start button, type 'windows update' then click 'view update history') which might help pinpoint the failed update. From there you can un-install updates and get Windows to re-download and re-install them which might do the trick.

if all else fails, you can reinstall without formatting, which should keep all your files but you'll have to re-install your software (I think, assuming Vista is the same as XP in this respect, having not tried this method in Vista myself)

install wasnt done properly so backup important files and format

Sounds like you porbably reset in the middle of installing service pack 1... Try as chrishill says above, failing that backup all your sisters stuff and reformat, might well be the simplest and most effective option...

sorry to ask a stupid question , but is there definitely no restore points ? have you physically checked ?

usually it is made by vista itself , when there is an update !

As in, the control panel program doesn't even start? Sounds like it might be completely foobar'd unfortunately! Probably best to backup and format it.

hey try this before you go formatting !

Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
Press a key when you are prompted.
Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
Click Repair your computer.
Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
Type Bootrec.exe, and then press ENTER.

you basically want to try and fix the boot sector ! the command prompt for this is

/FixBoot

but if all else fails ! as been said SAVE all files needed ! and then then insert your disc as a new installation , format drive c and install !

/scanOs
/RebuildBcd

your best bet will be to burn all the files, photos, music and whatever else on to a CD or copy to a USB stick or something, pop the vista disc into the CD drive and restart. Watch for a 'press any key to boot from CD' message and follow the instructions. When it shows you the installed hard drives, pick the main one and select 'format'.

If you don't see the 'boot from CD' message you'll need to alter a setting in the BIOS so the computer tries to boot from the D drive before the hard-drive (google will tell you how to do this).

It WILL wipe all your files, but its the only way to ensure the system is running properly.

just get a backup done before anything else as messing around with boot sectors etc might just make things a whole lot worse and you'll never be able to back them up!
