GTA 4 (360 version) ALWAYS FREEZING!

God this is making me do my nut now!! Ive had my 360 for about 2 weeks (the new premium 60GB version) I have about a dozen games, all work fine except for this pile of tripe! Played it about a week ago for half hour and it was fine. Now when i load it up, i just keep getting unreadable disc errors sometimes as soon as it start, but within 5 minutes tops when i play the game. The disc is perfect and every other game boots flawlessly. Ive heard this problem is widespread, but cant really find the solution. Has this happened to anyone here and how did you get around it?

If it's just that one game it happens with I would take
the game back ( I presume it's as new as the system? )
I cannot see it being a problem with the system as the other games work fine
#2
No there is no problems on the 360 version (early PS3 version were reported doing things but I think that was only the 60gig version anyway) take it back the GTA disc is faulty ..
#3
If u taking it back ensure there is no scratches on the back as would most probs be a waste of journey.
#4
there is no scratches on it whatsoever. It came with my 360 in the bundle from Game. Guess ill be taking it back then!
#5
I was playing mine on the 360 the other day and got lines on the screen 1/3 and 2/3 up the screen.

Looked like little equaliser bars, when I paused it screen was ok but went back to game and lines appeared again. went after about 5 mins but annoying just the same.

after a bit of further reading on the net it seems this is a pretty big problem. Im of the assumption that im going to take this back, get a new copy and still have the same problems! I've only bought a 360 because i thought they had ironed there garbage out, but it seems not!
#7
I had a similar issue with an Arcade that eventually spread to all games as the DVD drive was faulty.

Not saying this is what's happening to you but it happens. :)

so does anyone think its worth taking my 360 back as well then? Like i said ive had it for 2 weeks from new from Game. I also have (bought seperately either second hand or new, PGR3, PGR4, Eternal Sonata, Lost Odysee, Halo 3, Medal Of Honor, Mass Effect, Gears Of War, COD2. All of which run without a single hitch or anything.

All over the net it says that this problem is most probably the "beginning of the end" to the 360, but I cant see why it only happens on this one disc. Ill exchange both if i need to, i just dont want to be going back and forth to Game
#9
GAME are really good about exchanging 360s. You shouldn't have any problem getting a replacement off them. I should now, i've done it 3 times so far :)

Oh dear.

Hope you kept the receipt as this is what happened on my first faulty 360. After about a week or so I started to get the dreaded RROD.

I thought an internet update fixed this bug...................

have you tried the patch?
#13
well, upon first loading the game it told me there was an update to the game and then it looked like it connected to live for a few seconds then carried on loading.

I played for the first time to the point where you are left alone in the flat at the start. Then i saved.

Went back to it yesterday and it will load to gameplay maybe 75% of the time. But once i get that far and walk out the apartment, ill walk around the city for a minute or two, then ill notice blurry textures (where they dont seem to be loading from low res to hi res as you get closer to building etc) and low and behold about 5 seconds later, it will crash on me, giving me an unreadable disc error

I have tried to walk from the start to the first place you meet Roman at his work and ive never managed once to cover that small distance before the crash

I only ever get disc errors with one of my games after many hours playing, it's more than likely the disc.

Only way to know for sure would be to get your hands on another copy of GTA IV and try it again, if you get the same error then your 360 is defective.

yep, that is the common bug. A new disk wont help.

try deleting the saved game data and the actual game install files (if there are any on a 360?).

then reinstall and patch and try again.
#16
ill delete the saves and try again . 360 doesnt give you the option to install (yet anyway)

If this doesnt work ill take it back and get a refund then. I didnt think it was my 360 as everything else is dandy. What a crock this is. Looks like i might have to go without GTA then! Why oh why didnt i keep my ps3!

Well an update. Ive tried today and so far after 30 minutes its fine. Which is leading me to believe its my 360. As when i was having it crash yesterday they 360 had already been on for a few hours. So im guessing maybe its getting too hot no?

could be dude, they need to be well ventilated but the newest ones should stand up to much more than the old ones, get a book or something that is about 2cm thick or bigger but fits in-between the air holes on the bottom of the 360, and sit it all on a desk 360 ontop of the book, this should keep the air getting around it.

dont go sitting it on your bed or a carpet where it sinks slightly.

I don't know about you but my 360 (launch m/b, repaired once) has never given me a disc error while playing GTA IV (stands vertically).

The new ones can't be that good :o.

also after taking GTA out, ive noticed a very slight ring around the disc, a really tiny groove mark, similar to a scratch as well. Im sure this wasnt there when it was new

that does sound like a 360 problem. Welcome to the wonderful world of the xbox returns procedure.

sod that, im hoping that with it being under 28 days, im entitled to get it replaced at game and not have to go through all that, we shall see!

When my first 360 died, for a week or so running up to it I was getting little multicoloured artefacts at various points while playing Hitman. They looked a little like the kind of thing you get when a video on your computer breaks up with lines of blocks.

Eventually the whole thing seized up and flashed the RROD. Luckily I had gotten it from a shop with a good returns policy and swapped the thing out pretty easily (and was allowed to swap HDD). My second 360 that died had to be sent to MS but was pretty easy and got me a free month Live for my trouble.

Well i took GTA back to GAME and got it exchanged. Played for a few hours and am getting exactly the same problem. Incidently the game works fine on a mates 360, no crashing at all. All other games still working perfectly. Looking into the situation deeper i think its the drives on the 360, and id bet my money on the fact its these new Lite On drives in the premium 360s that are the problem, they must be picky with some discs. GTA being one of them. So looks like to me that this game goes on the backburner until the new dash comes out and i can run the game off my hard drive. I think its shocking tho that we have to put up with this when we have paid full price for a product only for it not to work

If i were to take my 360 back, which i suppose im allwoed to under the 28 day returns policy, would i be getting the same drive if i bought a 120gig Black elite? Or would it be pot luck?
