I'm quite new to GPU pricing and was surprised at products being well beyond RRP, not below like I am used to :P I find it surprising that generally Amazon seems to be one of the worse places to buy these GPUs from in terms of price.

Any price predictions for 1070/1080 on Black Friday sales? Do GPUs generally go down on Amazon? With the infrequency of sales on these cards I feel that Black Friday may just bring more choice of manufacturer at a price around £350 like this one http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/zotac-geforce-gtx-1070-8gb-gddr5x-vr-ready-graphics-card-349-94-free-delivery-awd-2540780 I don't think cards will be dropping lower than that, just more of them reducing in price.

If you want the cheapest price, you may want to wait till January when the new GPu will be released.

I agree. Best yet, I'd recommend getting last years top cards second hand. You'll make a huge saving and your perforance wont be far behind the latest cards. I recently bought two Gigabyte 980ti G1 cards for £470. Each of these are faster than a standard 980ti and not too far behind a 1080. I have two in sli for around £200 less than a single gtx 1080.

I made the mistake last time I upgraded my machine of spending £900 on two brand new top end cards. At the end of four years I sold them and got £120 back for the pair. £780 loss.

Why the heck are these things so expensive.

Mainly because it is aimed at the bleeding edge. Those that want to get the best performance will pay top dollar, so the manufacturer charges it. Also bear in mind they aren't exactly a mainstream product, so those buying them are paying essentially for the R&D process.

AMD don't have anything to compete against them so there's nothing to drive down the price.

I think that we will see a nice drop in prices when the 1080ti arrives and the new flagship AMD card, that will definitely put prices down for the rest.
