Half of British adults do not believe in evolution, with at least 22% preferring the theories of creationism or intelligent design to explain how the world came about, according to a survey.

The poll found that 25% of Britons believe Charles Darwin's theory of evolution is "definitely true", with another quarter saying it is "probably true". Half of the 2,060 people questioned were either strongly opposed to the theory or confused about it.

The Rescuing Darwin survey, published to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species, found that around 10% of people chose young Earth creationism the belief that God created the world some time in the last 10,000 years over evolution.

About 12% preferred intelligent design, the idea that evolution alone is not enough to explain the structures of living organisms. The remainder were unsure, often mixing evolution, intelligent design and creationism together. The survey was conducted by the polling agency ComRes on behalf of the Theos thinktank.

oi!

where do they do surveys like this?
none of the adults i know ever get asked questions like this and the other surveys they do, so who do they ask?

and why do they take small % of the population of Britain and say thats what the whole country does/ thinks?
#4
I always thought Bill Hicks had the best answer to people who believed in creationism:

Explain Dinosaur Fossils!!!

Good questions :

(1) you can check with the survey company for details of where and when

(2) if you know the answer to (1) you can better answer whether the survey is representative of the population as a whole (re gender, class, etc.)
#6
I wonder what proportion of the population is vacantly echoing what they've told is the correct theory, and what proportion has actually looked into any theory at all.

So far at school we have only ever done the Darwin theory, not sure if we do others. Never felt the need to look at more theories

Evolution is how we become us, No doubt.

Darwin is a legend.
#12
Just a reflection of two things:

1) The reglious tradition our country has to put up with.
2) The way people in the UK like to challenge anything that is generally accepted (another example would be global warming theory).
#13
I think the fact that it's a theory says quite a lot??

To be fair liddle, I don't believe Darwin's hypothesis to be perfectly true, and my research is related to evolution. That said, its a million times more true than creationism will ever be! :giggle:

This must be The Grauniad having a serious lack of newsworthy content.

Utter drivel.

I'd love to see how the questions were worded on that survey.

There's a large difference between not believing something and being confused by it, by lumping those together is creates a misleading view - just because someone is confused by something doesn't mean they don't believe in it.

Would have not used those terms but http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b94/mybusiness/Smilies/Iagree2.gif

The whole foundation in religion is "faith" without which you cant believe.

John 20:24-29
"Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

A question posed by my Jehova's Witness friend: If the purpose of evolution is to rid the species of all non-essential and the obsolete elements that sap energy from the useful parts of the being's body and that serve no purpose either to the survival or the ability ot reproduce, then why did evolution evolve mankind into a species capable of enjoying poetry?

Also, while some of you may be aware of the Miller-Urey experiment, in which a reasonably accurate simulation of primative Earth's conditions was concocted in a lab, left for a few days, and then found to have produced some of the basic proteins that life builds upon, no-one has yet created life, and no scientist has yet convincingly demonstrated what the origins of life were, despite there being something nearing a thousand actively working towards the objective. Why do you think this is?

How on earth did they ascertain that ? Scientists are forever changing the boundaries and conclusions of many an experiment.

Yet still don't know why humans blush :whistling: interesting
