Halfords - Refunds, Exchanges? - Consumer rights? HELP!

Right i just got back from work and had one of the most annoyingest day ever!

I bought an Edge Subwoofer (built in amp) yesterday, had it fitted this morning - worked fine, all minimum settings(to let it work slowly)..At mid-day decided to check the manual to see if i can set the gain etc.
Turned my car on, it smelt funny, next thing u kno subwoofer doesnt turn on and see a lil bit of smoke coming off it!(but maybe because it was quite chilly in the morning?)

Anyways..
Took it to halfords and they say that my wiring is terrible, but i used the one which came with the bloody package! Then they say my ground isn't working and it rattles? (Why would that matter!? The car was sitting still when i tried it on!)

On top of that, i already had a subwoofer previously and this was supposed to replace my old one, everything worked before so why wouldnt these earth/power points work now?

Then they accuse me by saying i wired it wrong so they wouldn't feel its right to replace the product?

Seriously all i want is to replace the subwoofer not that i want a refund or anything!

Help me!!!!!!
Is there like any rights or anything i can mention?

I might take it to a different branch and see what they say..

Would be greatful if you could give me some ideas on what to do (or if you had previous experience!)

Rep will be left for useful stuff =D

Apparently "the manager wasn't in"

I have no idea why they said my earth was wrong, he also said my earth cable was too thick? (The thicker the wire - the less resistence which would be better anyways)

All he was trying to do was to make it out as though I was the person who broke this item and that he won't exchange it because of that!

Seriously i just spent ages saving up £80 to buy the bloody thing and it breaks in a day!

Earth should be nice and short and as thick as possible and fitted to something metal as close as possible to the amplifier. If it's loose it's only going to switch everything off and on again no worse than a switch really (possibly simplistic view however generally true) I had a 15" JBL 1KW sub back in the day and the vibration from it used to undo the earth quite regulary but never blew anything up!

Ignoring everything else, they are talking absolute **** about the earth being "too thick". I'd politely suggest that comment was directed at the staff member you spoke to.

dont take that. There will be a manager in, a big store wouldnt be open without a manager or senior person present. you shouldnt let them lie to you...

I took my brother with me, seeing that they may take advantage of seeing a young person - but my brother just went "oh ok" and ended up being dumber than me!

Luckily found one of my friends who works tomorrow, He told me to put all the wiring back in the box, take it back to the branch he works at & well tell them its faulty. So if they ask to see it working, they cant! because all the wires are in the box, and everythings been bolted back so i can't do it at the moment (or i had a tech man whos not here)
So all i have i to say is that I want a replacement, and if so can i keep the wires(so it looks blatently that i'm not messing them around!)
=D

Hopefully should go well tomorrow!

I'll keep you posted, Rep left to all =D

Would be greatful for some more consumer rights though or just some other advice just incase!

The sale of goods act (1979)

Section 14(3) - That the good supplied is fit for purpose... which in this case it is not.

This means you can request your money back, or an exchange. within a "reasonable time" - Its different for each cases but 2 days is definately reasonable.

Hope that information helps, if you need any more detailed information i can help you more, I've studied Business Law. You can alternatively find information on this website:

say that you spoke to them on 08450 579 000 and one of the reps (make up a name) said that you could have direct replacement or your money back if you take it to any store. Obviously they would always prefer to replace a product rather than give you your money back and thats what you want.
