Just received what lookd like th usual junk mail from halifax. I was about to bin it when I noticed this about changes to the halifax high interest current account:-

"Straightforward overdraught fees from 6th December"
Arranged overdraughts up to £2500 will be charged at £1 a day.
Arranged overdraughts ovr £2500 will be charged at £2 a day.
Unarranged overdraughts £5 a day.

This means (as I'm usually overdrawn all month except payday!) that I'll be paying between £30 & £60 a month for my current account!
At the moment I usually pay £5 at the most so this is a big difference!

Can anyone recommend a good bank to switch to?

I know, I'm just useless when it comes to money. I do have several savings accounts that would cover it but if I put that money into the current account I'd still be back to overdrawn in a couple of months!

alliance & leciester is 50p a day overdrawn to a maximum charge of £5 a month so might be worth switching

Having the same problem. Went into my branch yesterday to change from Ultimate Reward account back to normal current. They said it probably wasn't a good time to change because they were reviewing all their accounts due to all these claims going through. So in other words they're looking at ways to claw money back off the customers to cover their pricely mistakes. Been with them 14 years, and this is the first time i am seriously looking elsewhere. I'm guilty of using quite a high overdraft, and pay about 30 a month for this, plus the 12.50 they charge for the reward account. They want to take away the interest charges (was 30 for me) and change it to 1 or 2 pounds a day (now going to cost me 60) Would be bloody cheaper to get a loan!!! Screw you halifax!!

Well Thats 60 Squid A Month Down For Them Lol

We had the same but had only just changed to this a few months back as they changed their cashback account to the same terms. Had tried to switch to alliance and leicester but the wouldn't accept it as we were overdrawn for more then so many days a month!!
I think it may be time to change too. This is really my OH account and I have mine at Lloyds TSB (we are both named on both). I pay around £8 a month to get travel insurance etc included but OH is already included with that offer so we really don't want an account that we pay for which is what Halifax seems to be doing. I am too wanting to claim back about £600 after they charged me this for going £20 overdrawn and them not telling me by post!!

Looks like a good deal to me.

Maximum £5 charge a month plus £100 for joining.

Remember also, that an overdraft is really only supposed to be used short term, a lot of banks are calling in overdrafts at short notice.

An overdraft is probably amongst the most expensive ways of borrowing money.

The best way to stop banks from getting rich, is to stop using them for overdrafts.;-)

I've got a halifax account, never wanted it but leeds bank i was with years ago merged and i got stuck with them. I've got a joint account now at natwest and i don't use my halifax accounts. I'm seriously gonna consider closing them tho because for a few months running i was going over drawn due to microsoft live taking out money without me knowing. don't want to check on them one day and find out i'm £60 down.

Just completed sign up to A&L then was offered 'refer a friend' with £50 for each 'friend' that signs up.
Shame Idid'nt know before as Jamstar could've made £50 there by refering me.
If anyone else wants to join A&L I could refer them & go 50/50 (or rather 25/25!) if thats allowed on here?

I'm in the same boat, about to get fleeced by HBOS, all of their accounts online appear to have this bar the very basic easycash account or the student account.
Was tempted to go for A&L But their max overdraft is £2000 and that's less than what I have with HBOS.
Just going to have to really squeeze and try to reduce it greatly bit by bit...... :(
