My daughter cried that much when her rabbit died we pretended it was someone elses rabbit had got in the cage and died and hers was ok and got another. She literally refused to go to school etc she was that upset so it seemed easier to get another

Death is a part of life that everybody has to deal with at some times. At 11 years old she should be mature enough to understand the concept of death. Use it as an educational tool, and I don't mean disect it or carry out an autopsy!

Tell her when she comes home, not before.

Keep the body for her to pay respects to and have a burial/honouring procedure.

Ask her what she would like to do with all the remaining bedding/cage etc. She may mention wanting another, if she doesn't respect that xx

Crikey. I didnt realise Hamsters lived that long!

My grandma killed my hamster when I was her age.

Hammy 1.

She let it out of the cage and it went down under the house and picked up some skin disorder.

She decided to cage it via the hoover. It survived the hoover.

Reminds me of when my mother took my brothers poor " dead" hamster, stuck it in a box and buried it.....

We didnt realise she'd buried it alive but hibernating til it dug itself up again..........lol

Hi
Not sure how to say this, so I'll be blunt.
Are you sure that it's dead?
When it gets cold hamsters can go into a sort of hibernation and their bodies go cold and stiff as if rigor mortis has set in. I only know because this has happened to a few of mine in the past. The first time it happened I assumed that he had died but my flatmate suggested warming him up gently infront of the fire; and a short time later he was scampering around again.
If the wee fella is definitely dead though I would tell your daughter
Regards
Andy

I'm not so sure you'd taste the difference!

What's with all the Hamster threads tonight?

OP...... As COM said, let her see the hamster and explain what's happened and let her decide what to do with the body. Hopefully something a bit more up market than a McChicken box!!!
