We are going to get a Nintendo DS for our 7 year old, but so as his little brother doesn't feel left out we want to get him something similar but more robust and bash proof.

He can grow into consoles, I would try and keep him active and interested in other toys of his own, so he feels a sense of ownership. I trained as a teacher and consoles can stint brain development, especially at his age. x

I'd still get a DS, they're pretty durable and my little brother had one since he was about 4, he could barely play it but is 6 now and never puts it down.

Was looking along the lines of one with educational games on it such as vtech as they worked wonders for his brother.

Was actually looking at Vtech as they teach them without them realising.

the vtech vsmile pocket is about right for him - and will grow with him as games are available for upto 7 year olds.
there's also the leapster, which is pretty similar to the vsmile one but made by leapfrog.
or you could consider buying him a gameboy advance - older technology so therefore cheaper (but only around 2nd hand)
but the vsmile or leapster are better for educational games, very little available that's not just entertaining on the gameboy!

Get him a GameBoy Original or Pocket. They're pretty cheap, and fairly robust. I've seen them get dropped before and still work! Even the original GameBoy Advance can be had for under £20 now, and again they're fairly robust, just don't get him an SP as they can be snapped in half quite easily..

The original vsmile pocket is available from tesco for £30 here
http://direct.tesco.com/search/default.aspx?search=vsmile&confirm.x=0&confirm.y=0
although the game with it is a bit advanced for a 3 year old IMO
The newer one called the cyber pocket which has a flip screen and touchpad is the one in Argos (posted above for £45) I think Scooby Doo might be a bit hard too, but all of the vsmile console games work in the pocket consoles so there are lots to choose from for younger players (my daughter liked Winnie the Pooh and Noddy)
If you do get one, it might be worth joining the vsmile club on the vtech site - they often have special offers on new games (£2.99 - £4.99).
