Happy 25th Birthday To The Smiley :-)

THE computer smiley symbol :-) celebrates its 25th birthday today.

The sideways face used in millions of emails was invented by an IT expert in Pittsburgh, US.

Prof Scott Fahlman was the first to use a colon followed by a hyphen and a close bracket to form a smiley in a computer message.

It has since spawned dozens of similar characters, including the wink ;-) sad face :-( yawn :-O and surprise 8-O.

Prof Fahlman said he prefers :-) to the modern computer graphic of a smiling face, adding: It destroys the whimsical element of the original.

Only in America would a person become an IT expert by making a smiley face.
It was originally a sad face until he switched his pc off then back on again :giggle:

Revised when I was informed that my comment about them being smug little 'ecrements' was too explicit even with some letters blanked out.

I just feel that the laughing/snickering smiley is used either to point out that something is SUPPOSED to be funny, when that shouldn't need pointing out if it genuinely was or to excuse the fact that you've been rude about or towards somebody, but 'it's only a joke' so you can't possibly take offence...
By the same token the "eyes raised/rolling to the sky/heaven" smiley seems to universally indicate "here we go again/you're boring me"...either of which most of the time you wouldn't be so rude as to say directly to a person.
In general I feel they've gone beyond being a humorous way to end an e-mail or post & they're just used lazily by people when they're either too lazy or inarticulate to put their point accross without them.

I of course realise that I'm in a tiny minority in feeling this way & hey, if you want to use them it's all down to personal taste.

But as you've seen time and time again on these forums some things typed on screen can be taken completely the wrong way (unlike face to face conversations where people pick up on facial expressions etc)

For instance I thought - what if charlie thinks I'm getting at him? - so I put in the giggle. Its very easy for flame wars to start so in some ways I think they're useful - although I prefer the good old fashioned text versions....

I just came back to the thread to say this, they do help LOTS when you're trying to be cheeky or make a joke... a picture's worth a thousand words!!

I understand what you're saying, but ultimately they're a 'short-cut' to writing something out clearly enough that mis-understanding doesn't occur.
Such short-cuts, as with abreviations & some text language serve a purpose & save people from the time it would take both the reader & writer to write & read a statement & for most people they are therefore a useful tool.
They're just not for me Gari.
(In almost 4,000 posts I've only had a couple of posts here where people claim to have 'not got' what I meant & most of those have been down to my slightly warped sense of humour rather than people not realising they were jokes or sarcasm)

A comedian can tell a joke with swearing in it & another can tell the same joke without a both can be equally funny (sometimes the non-swearing version can bo even MORE inventive & funny) & just think smiley's are a bit like that...if something's funny it's funny, I personally don't think smiley's make something funnier, but hey, each to their own....
