Hard disk ones use digital memory cards just like a digital camera (SD or memory stick type of thing) and record straight onto the memory card. Benefits include: smaller camcorder, better quality picture, easily watched, copied, transferred etc, all the benefits you get with digital cameras really.

Errm no hard disk camcorders use well erm hard disks thats why you seem them with 40/60gb capacities how many memory cards do you see with that size memory?

Different types of camcorder

In an attempt to avoid all un-necessary jargon, let's keep it simple. Although one camcorder looks much like another, you'll find that there are several ways of making a recording - and each of these will have an impact on what you can do with the recordings later on. In essence, the types of camcorder recording system are:

Videotape Cassette - recording to digital tape, like MiniDV ("DV") and HDV

DVD disc - uses recordable DVD discs for playing in a home DVD player or PC

Hard Disk Drive - HDD, saving to non-removable hard disk drives

Solid State Media Card - saving to cards like SD and Memory Stick PRO
@OP judging by the spelling mistake dare I ask what the intended use of this will be? I would like to volunteer for the role of cameraman/director/editor* if its as I think:whistling:

The camcorder will connect to your computer via either usb/firewire/minidv for editing.

HDD camcorders are smaller than tape ones, as there is no need for a tape drive mechanism. As you are recording to a hard drive the picture quality is (as a rule) much better, although you can choose the quality of recording - the higher the quality the more disk space is needed & therefore the less filming you can store.

Film transfer & editing is much easier as the camcorder can be connected direct to your PC & the hard drive is then 'seen' as an external hard drive.

I have a 30Gb HDD camcorder, which was plenty big enough for a 2 week holiday.
