Hard Drive Help

emJayOemJayO

Hey guys,

I've bought a 2TB SATA hard drive but it seems my PC doesn't have any more power connections spare (I'm guessing it's the power cable that has about 4 ports on for connecting on SATA devices).

What do I need to do to get the hard drive working? Is there any way I can add another power connection or anything like that?

Sorry if this is already asked somewhere, couldn't find it.

Many thanks,
-Matt

One of these if you have a spare SATA connection - 280481540359

Or these if you have a spare molex connection - 120623430435

    (ebay auction numbers)

First of all, thanks to everyone for the replies.
I thought I had a decent idea of what I needed to do, but I don't, lol.

The first picture shows some spare ports, not sure if those are the ones you guys are referring to or not. Second picture shows the SATA power connection going in to one of my hard drives. If I bought a "SATA Power Splitter Cable" could I just split one of the connections that are already in use?

    Many thanks,

If that is your spare port in the second picture? (think you have your pictures confused lol) then this ebay auction is the thing you need - 120623430435

Yep, that is a spare port and you're right, I got the pictures the wrong way around.
Will that give enough power and not compromise anything like transfer speed or anything like that for the SATA drive?
Thanks a lot for all the help :)

No everything will be fine. That cable is simply to feed power to the drive, the actual sata cable will deal with everything else (transfers etc)

Brilliant, thanks for all the replies mate - really do appreciate it.
Have just ordered a cable now :)

SATA hard drives don't use molex for power, did you look at the back of the hard drive....They use sata power connectors. Anyway you could use a molex splitter, and then from there a molex to sata connector.

The 2tb won't have but some did have 4 pin molex as well as sata

Could do with a bit of advice.. I bought one of those cables that were mentioned in the thread.
Drive was recognised, formatted it and it worked.. For a few mins!

After rebooting I kept getting this message:

Does that basically mean by drive is buggered?

    Many thanks,

Yes, I have one, it was only some of the first ones which were like 5-6+ years ago now. So it didn't really need mentioning, especially with a brand new drive.

Except you stated SATA hard drives don't use molex for power. So maybe don't make a statement that is not true then I or anyone else that knows better won't mention it.

Thing is someone sees a post were it states sata hdd do not use MOLEX and they think it's accurate . Regardless of using any common sense as to the way tech moves on they are oblivious to any technology not being savvy etc and simply repeat or take onboard this information and therefore learn nothing or have a false piece of information.

Even the op did not know which power cable to use on the 2tb as there were unaware of the difference between molex and sata power connectors only thing they could see where lots of cables coming from the psu.

More and more sata connectors are normal on psu's now and consumers now need sata rather than ide/ and sata power has replaced 4 pin molex for hdd use as the norm now.

Fine, I'll give you this one, but regardless they ALL have sata power, so they'd have lost nothing by getting a molex to sata adaptor.

That is was what they needed to buy (was never in question)

ummmm any ideas on my question?

Disable S.M.A.R.T in the BIOS and see what happens.

with the screen saying secondary master( it would indicate a non sata hdd has gone bad) connect cables again and make sure ide cable is still connected to the motherboard properly)

If it is your sata hdd then the sata controller might not be handling the hdd correctly eg listing it as sec master is not normal (some early controllers named them like this via bios though when in ide mode fm). change sata cable / port.

Which motherboard / model number have you got ?

Wasn't aware there was a section for this in the bios, Cheers!

It's a 2TB SATA drive. I've tried using the MOLEX thing to split an IDE to power the SATA.

My motherboard is (I think!) an ASUS P5Q-E
