This man should be given a state funeral in my opinion.

I've read a couple of books on him and both have reduced me to tears.

The debt of gratitude we owe to people like him can never really be put into words.

This is a very sad day for Britain.

RIP Harry

It's sad but I don't think he needs a state funeral.

very sad, not sure why you think he needs a state funeral though, was it because he lived to a ripe old age or because he fought in the war
#4
As the last of his generation, I just think that he deserves to be recognised, not just him personally to be honest, but as a tribute to the millions of men and women who died in that war.

It is the end of an era.

Wouldn't a state-funeral kind of belittle all those others who died in the past 90 years, or indeed those who died during the war though?

It is, as you say though, the end of an era.... It won't be too long till those who fought or lived through WW2 will be few in their numbers.

yes it is very sad and the end of an era, but what about all the others, what about those who died in the war let alone those who survived it

The man never wanted any recognition, as far as he was concerned he was a lucky one and it was the ones who never came back should be honoured. If the man gets any honours whatever it would be to remember all who died and suffered, including their families, in that horrendous war....

Technically, it's not a sick joke. It's a joke about his name being similar to Harry Potter's.

It is very sad, and if not a state funeral to mark the significance of this moment in time, then what? Should it just pass us by, brief comments on forums and pub chats, to be forgotten in a week or so? There should be something more significant to mark this end of an era.

I think what he was hoping was we could keep this thread respectful:thumbsup:

He became Britain's oldest man when another veteran of the war, Henry Allingham, died exactly one week ago on July 18 aged 113

Nice that he lived to achieve that, lets hope he is at peace now

We could stop letting old men send young men to die. That would be a fitting tribute.
