Harveys, Peel good furniture! Do not buy a sofa from them!

I would like to make everyone aware about the terrible service I received recently from Harveys the Furniture Store! They lied to us! Never buy a sofa from them! We ended up having a battle with them to get a refund!:

The quality of our new Sofa (http://www.harveysfurniture.co.uk/pr...s/jupiter.aspx) was shocking. After a few months it developed lots of small tears/rips and pins where sticking out. Non of these defects were due to accidental damage.

So we rang Harveys for a refund who said that before we get a refund they would have to send out an inspector to asses whether or not the tears were due to manufacturing defect or accidental damage.

The company ( Ecomaster) came out and inspected the tears and pins and repaired the rips. Then after that I rang Harveys expecting to get a refund and they said the report came back as accidental damage! I was shocked.

So another month past and even more rips started to appear! About twenty in total, all over the single seater and the 3 seater! So I rang Harveys and again they said that there inspector had to come out. So the same guy came out again and again Harveys said it was due to accidental damage! I complained on the phone and asked for the duty manager and was told no manager was available. So I had to pay £99 to the furniture ombudsman (who were very helpful) to get and independent report done (as per guidance form Trading standards).

The report came back as manufacturing fault! So the report was sent to Harveys and by this time we posted a message of complaint on Harvey’s Facebook page and within an hour a manger from Harveys phoned us back! A copy of the report was e-mailed to Harveys who accepted that it was manufacturing fault (after a long standing battle on the phone!). We got a £99 refund for the report and Harveys said they would offer us a full refund but it would take few weeks as it would be via a cheque!

We argued with them as we had paid on line with visa debit and due to card scheme rules we were entitled to a refund back on the visa debit card. We then arranged for the junk/firewood sofa to be collected and on the day it was collected we rang Harveys and eventually got our refund (instantly). We also complained to Ecomaster who said that both reports concluded that the tears could have been accidental but the sticking out pins were in fact manufacturing fault! So we knew that Harveys were lying to us and withheld information from the Ecomaster report!

I will never buy from them again and we have recently bought a quality sofa from DFS. I have listed some useful contacts for Harveys below. If you are having difficulty with Harveys I would recommend posting it on their Facebook wall and also contact trading standards for advice! It's a shame we didn't use a credit card!

I wouldn't like to alarm you but DFS's reputation is about the same as Harvey's. If you're lucky, you'll get a good sofa. :|

Personally, I wouldn't go near either of them. I suppose that, if you were being generous, the level of complaints about DFS is not quite as high as Harveys. But they're both fairly dreadful.

High street furniture pffft don't. Ron is right. I'd go independent.
Of the nationals, I'd use John Lewis, M&S or Debenhams mainly because they all have some reputation to maintain. Against that they're not the cheapest around though, come to that, neither are Harveys or DFS.

M&S sofas are not good quality from experience (personal and friends & family) as is their bedroom furniture. Really shocking.
JL are really good, but expensive.
Laura Ashley sofas are ok and their furniture fab.
Debenhams - no idea.

If you are really lucky, DFS will have a Sale on.. ( sarcasm )

I would buy from a local manufacturer, I did, it was made to order, they allowed me to inspect it and they delivered it before paying them a penny.

Jammiev - thanks for sharing your experience with Harveys.

I came across your comment trying to locate an independent review resource on dining furniture that I bought from Harveys. I wish I had done some online checks on their reputation before. Makes me believe they are very irresponsible retailers.

I am yet to start my battle with them for the defective dining furniture. :(

I have had the Jupiter sofa for over a year the sofa has 15 tears in it . Exon aster have been around to inspect it and they can clearly see it is a manufaturating problem . Harvey's are allowing me to find a sofa for the value of £970 pound the sofa cost £1022 pounds . I still can't find a sofa for that price . Also this sofa was sold to me as leather I have now discovered it is partly vinal . Harvey's have well and truly ripped me off . I am expecting to look in the. Store this weekend if I don't find one I will be expecting a full refund . Harvey's have truly let me down . So when you buy a sofa from them make sure you know what your buying.

I ordered a dining table and chairs from Harvey’s Furniture Store. After waiting 8 weeks for it to arrive, the table was not the one I ordered and all 4 chairs were damaged!! After much time spent on the phone they agreed to pick up and give a refund. They arranged a day to pick up and surprise never turned up. They then apologised and booked another day they would pick up (another day of work for me) and no pick up again. This was very frustrating so asked to speak to a manager. Not able to get hold of a manager as always in meetings?! They will not give a refund until goods have been picked up. Spoke to trading standards and there is nothing to say this in the law so I demanded a refund. As I had given them sufficient time to pick the goods up. They would not do this. After sending many emails they set another date for pick up. They finally turned up and the driver told me Harvey’s always do this as they hope you will give up and just keep the goods. Still not had my refund though!!

Don't go with CSL - you'll be lucky to actually get a sofa. Took 7 months to get mine after they mucked the order up the first time around.
