Has any one else found anything odd in Birdseye?

Last night I found a caterpillar (Large, though it had been steamed, frozen and microwaved, so very dead) in a packet of Birdseye Steam fresh rice and vegetables. Its one of my favourites and has definitely now put me off for life. When I phoned up to complain, the guy gave me the impression this was quite normal!!! Therefore I was wondering if anyone else had found similar???

If I am not allowed to put this please delete.

I'd complain again! Put the little blighter back in your freezer in case you need to provide it as proof :)

eeeuuuggghhh that is so yuck:x
#3
at least you didn't find a Birds Eye! ;-)
#4
maybe you should steam some fresh rice and vegetables, doesn't take that long and at least you can check it yourself and is so much better for you.
#5
looks like you hot the special steamed rice

this is hot
whats the barcode?

Id definately complain although i dont know how far it will get you. I found a rusty nail in a box of kelloggs crunchy nut cornflakes yet when i sent it to them they said that it must have got in the packet when it was shipped to the shops and not their problem - Even though it was actually inside the sealed inner bag half way down the packet!

Ewwwww. I certainly wouldn't say it's 'normal' to expect dead extras in your food.

Sounds to me like you had someone that was trying to play it down so it didn't end up on page 24 of the Sun, with you stood there holding the caterpillar in your hand :-D

I think you should write in a letter though and make a formal complaint and certainly the least you should get is a refund, as I doubt very much you ate the rest of their 'normal' rice and veg. And as already suggested, keep the evidence in the freezer, just incase - if you still have it that is !

I remember seeing a program once where they said that the simple fact is, they can never remove all the bugs and grubs from food production, so there are limits set to as to how many are allowed to get through into the final product. I seem to remember one limit was 2.5 maggots per tin of chopped tomatos.

Thats so Wrong!!!

I have to post it back in a free post envelope there sending. Though my friend found a live and rather fat beatle sealed in a pack of wheatabix, and she posted it back and never heard anything!

LOL, this made me laugh so much. I only ever steam my veg, best things ever invented steamers BUT...................
a while ago we were having our usual brocolli dished up with the other veg and meat etc, Went to eat it and by the side of the brocolli was this perfectly cooked caterpillar sitting bolt upright just looking at me.
We could only assume it had fallen out of one florets as it was served up !

Having spent many years in food retail the answer to the OP is yes , it is commonplace, more so in fresh than frozen, but you will get the odd one.
Birds Eye will refund and replace or whatever as will your supermarket. Act hurt enough and you may get a bit more.

The product you really have to watch is fresh fish, all sorts of creepy crawlies in that stuff, lol :w00t:

By the way you're nearly always better off taken the offending item back to the supermarket/store.
They are much more aware of bad publicity.

Never hand it over until you are happy with the compensation.

Don't expect a world cruise out of it :)

i once thought i found some fish in a fishfinger.......but i was wrong :whistling:

I would write to Birdseye and enclose a photo of the item found.

I once wrote to Walkers as I found a horrible looking thing in a bag of salt 'n' vinegar crisps, I did return the actual item to them, (realise now this was a bad move on my part) they replied with an apology and sent me a whole box of salt 'n' vinegar crisps!

Apparently what I had found was the item they use to flavour the crisps with, it really didn't look very appitising! :w00t:

I found a 3" long piece of bone down the inside of a sausage roll once.... I know they're made out of all the yukky off cuts, but it wasn't pleasant to find :) I complained to the company, who sent me £30 (I think) in vouchers to buy similar products from the same company :|

I gave them all away

i once found a piece of concrete in a bag of Asda prawn crackers, they sent my a gift card with £5 on it to apologise

I got nothing apart from a letter - not even a refund on the cereal - definately wish i hadnt sent the actual rusty nail i found to them as they refused to return it to me so i had no proof

It would have been worse if you'd found half a caterpillar! Tee Hee

Years ago found a worm in a Birds Eye cod portion. Reply from them was that so many per kilo are acceptable as they are naturally occurring parasitic worms. Don't know if it's just me that's unlucky, but have also found the same thing in cod from a chip shop! Haven't eaten any more cod since.
#22
parasitic worm? gross!

I bit into a steak and gravy pie from iceland one before, and it had a big solid ball shaped tin foil in it. Took it back to iceland and they gave me £50 worth of vouchers.

Definately better going to the shop rather than complaining to the company, and definately dont send the original evidence away, then they'l destroy it and can deny all knowledge, so you've no case.
#24
i onc found a fingernail in a ready meal. we havent had ready meals since.
i complained and got 20 pound supermarket voucher for my trouble.

i aim to please :) or so the gf tells me :whistling:

If the store refuse to do anything about this, tell them that you are going to take the proof to the Trading Standards Office, Health Department. They could get a big fine over this so it should prompt them to give you adequate compensation.....

An evil glare. From the pelican, just before chasing me.

I've had little ball bearings in my microwave 'fries to go' and I bit on one of them... ouch!
I found a dead caterpillar in a tin of sweetcorn ... thought it was a slice of mushroom at first!
Recently pulled some tissue out of my Tesco vegetable curry ... I HOPE IT WASN'T USED!
Never bought any of these products since!
Don't trust anything unless you've made it yourself from scratch ... I don't even trust restaurants anymore... I once got some rice with my take-away and it smelled of wee!

There may have been a pelican once now there is just the eye.http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:oscCumPWemO4yM:http://www.hiltonpond.org/images/VireoRedEyedEye01.jpg
Your flight is unnecessary because the eye can't!:-D

I found some glass in my shepards pie once not sure if my mum was trying to get rid off me at the time.

Found loads of little flies in 2 different sealed packs of tesco instore bakery hotdog rolls.

Tesco werent @rsed - even though the flies werent there the night before and so we could have eaten the fly lava which would have made me really ill because of low immunity.
#33
I once got a roast bumble-bee in a jar of Uncle Ben's sweet & sour. I only got a letter of apology.
At least it had been cooked....
#34
I once found a stone in my tesco peas. Took it back to the store and they had to send it off to idenify if it was in at the time of packing, They found it was and sent me a £5.00 voucher and replaced my peas. I complained again that if i had not seen it it could of cost a bit more in dentists fees and they gave me another £5.00 after much debate. Better than a kick up the a**e.:)
#35
I can't find the tesco receit and there really funny about you having a receit at my local one. Thats why I phoned Birdseye. I might have a word next time I go into Tesco still, see what they say. The rice is a 4 pack, that was the second pack, the first one I shared with my baby who was a year today, that really bothers me as it's obviously the same batch!

After reading all the replies I think I should of titled this thread 'Kick start your New Year Diet, Read this!' It puts you off eating!

Beetle in a green pea Ainsley Harriot cup soup.
Screw in a take away curry.
Clump of hair in a take away pizza and multiple hairs in a restaurant pizza.
Plastic bag in a steak pie (covering meat).
Dead fly in a bag of pistachio nuts.

These are just the ones I remember, I have bad luck with food.

And that list doesn't count the general bad luck I have in restaurants. In one fancy Italian place I was burned by a faulty hand dryer and my girlfriend had a load of dirty forks dropped from two flights of stairs (by a numpty kitchen porter down a stair well) onto her head causing a nasty cut. :?

I guess you can count yourself lucky it was just a caterpillar:
