Didn't think they would do without you being sedated? As you would gag reflex naturally.

so did he do it without sedation or was it pretty bad even being sedated?
#6
not pleasant btw-you will puke when they take it out for certain! whether sedated or not,but if you need it,then get it done.
#7
Dont know if its the same procedure as you but I have had a tube down throat but they inserted it through the nasal passage. It was a while back now but cant remember it being majorly traumatic.

I had it before, it's not fun, but I wasn't sick or had any ill-effects after, bar a sore throat. I was a brave little soldier though.:{

Without. I think he's had it with though as well. I know he's had further appointments for it again and he's not returned for it. (In his eyes they dont find anything, so why put himself through it again!)

Whilst its not pleasant, there are far worse procedures you could be having!
#12
I've had two and couldn't be sedated because of health issues. I was a tad panicked so took rescue remedy drops on my tongue before but it wasn't all bad. Had two nurses holding my hand and saying soothing words throughout.
#13
wife has had it done, and was sedated, and after the procedure, her throat hurt. (from the GAS).
and she sed it was like a really bad bad cough,

yes its through the mouth for the stomach camera-and I have had it done. I dont want to frighten you,but its best to be prepared-it is utterly horrible, but you just have to tell yourself that it will be over soon and they wouldnt be doing it without good reason. I am sure you know the 2 main reasons they will do this and it is VITAL you get it done.sore throat for 3-4 days afterwards and apparently everyone is sick when they remove the camera.you should also stop taking any meds like omeprazole 3 weeks before they do it.

ive had one the other end a few years back i think i would prefer one up there than down my throat

I had one when I was diagnosed with coeliac disease.
They give you a single tablet to make you feel sleepy and stop the gag reflex. I was nearly asleep and although I was aware of what they were doing I didnt feel a thing.
It wasnt pleasant but not unpleasant - if you see what I mean.
I was not sick or felt sick at all. Took about 5 minutes.
The thought of it is far worse than the actual procedure which was actually not bad.

Ah nasal passage would stop your gag reflex can't see it being nice that way.

When my kindeys were bleeding out and I was in pain with my bladder filling full of clots I had Angiogram while in imense pain but it wasn't caused by the Angiogram, though it did feel like a car ariel going through the major aterys in your leg.

So I can imagine it being like a tickling feeling that is uncormfortable. Sure Barky knows.

hope all goes well-Im surprised the omeprazole doesnt help you-maybe a higher dose? most people find it a complete wonder drug.

I've had all that as well. I find the fear factor is worse than the procedures most of the time. But if you let them know your fears in advance they do what they can to help.

Was it under the same circumstances as I have sympothy for anyone who has had to go through that.

They'll just use a spray to numb your throat for it. It doesn't hurt it just feels weird especially when the show you the screen and you can see the camera move and feel it at the same time.

I've had 3 and never felt ill after it or had any discomfort with the throat or had any sort of gag reflex. Key thing is to relax which is easier said than done sometimes.

thanks for all the replies think i will get sedated
#27
You can have a throat spray that will numb your throat but can still make you feel as you're going to gag, they also use gas or sedation :)
My mother is a HCA for endoscopy :D

Chances are they won't sedate you as it is not needed. I asked for it on my first one and they said they wouldn't sedate me

I've had one of these, and I had some sedation beforehand. For me it was absolutely fine; didn't have any ill effects before or after, not even a sore throat so I count myself lucky having read this thread. I honestly don't think it is anything to worry about too much, but that is just based on my experience.

Perhaps when you get your appt through you could ring up the ward and ask what the sedation options are if you want a bit more info.
suspended#33
if you cant be sedated get a book on breathing exercises to help you remain calm, if you concentrate on breathing calmly it will help, the worst thing to do is panic, also a book on self hypnosis might help, or take an ipod and listen to your fav tunes, anything that helps take your mind off whats going on, you'll be fine, think positively

edjaned don't you suffer really badly with anxiety? if so then you will be offered sedation as the procedure is far worse if you are all pent up, i am sure this will be in your records, sorry if i have got you mixed up with someone else

being sedated will be much easier for you when you have the procedure, and something i am sure they will discuss with you when you get there, good luck and hope everything is ok x
#37
My experience was just like Studentessa's - and a couple of others I've asked - dont worry about it, we didn't mind it and didn't get a sore throat either.
Just do it, you'll feel better afterwards knowing they've had a look to see what, if anything, is wrong.

i was just more worried about there being side effects to the sedation prob me being paranoid again
they have mentioned that the swallowing problems im experiencing can be anxiety as it all started after some food getting stuck in my throat a few weeks ago

Remeber if your are sedated you are advised to have sombody with you for the next 24 hours, well thats what I was told when I had a colonoscopy but after a few hours I felt back to normal

Are they doing this as an Outpatient or In Patient?
