Has anyone on here bred dogs before?

I have a boy & girl cavalier king charles spaniel that have mated. Last time she was in season they mated loads & tied for ages every time, & after 3 trips to the vets for scans (1st time they told me she was pregnant, 2nd time told me she wasn't but made me take her back a 3rd time to check!) and no pregnancy. 36 days ago they started mating this time & her teats have got loads longer & she's a bit rounder (although she likes her food so has never been a slim dog!). Read books, but just wondered if anyone had any tips on how to tell without handing the vet a small fortune! Obviously as soon as i am more or less sure i will take her to the vets as i am not an irresponsible dog owner :) Thanks

buy this book its what i was told to read if i was going to mate my staffy, you no the mate sessions are you doing it just the once or twice with a day apart,

Signs of pregnancy

******* discharge will usually occur around 1 month after mating.

The teats will become more prominent due to an increase in the blood supply around the base of the nipples. This should appear between 25 to 30 days after mating.

Appetite is usually depressed during mid-pregnancy, but not in every case.

The abdomen will enlarge and the total body weight of your bitch may increase by 20%-55%. This may not be noticeable until 45-50 days into the pregnancy.

Behaviour may also change, such as displaying slight depression.

Closer to the delivery date, your bitch will probably start to express her nesting instincts, scratching at the floor or in her bed, and displaying signs of increasing restlessness.
On average, you should be able to tell whether or not your bitch is pregnant at around one month after mating.

Mating varied from 4 times a day to a couple of times a day! Obviously my boy was feeling very frisky!
Yeah similar stuff to what it says in my book that i've read a million times called the Book of th B***h A complete guide to understanding & Caring for B*****s. I thought she was pregnant last time though, so am trying not to get my hopes up but keep feeling her belly & saying oohh i think she is you know! When you have to pay £50 each time they do an ultrasound it gets a bit much when you find out that she isn't like last time, was so depressed afterwards :-( I can't wait for her to have pups :) Maybe i should wait until the end of next week (it'll be 45 days from first mating next friday.

yea same book ive got, id say the teats should be a good give away if you notice some change, is this your 1st time breeding? if she is pregnant you got all your breeding box etc ready, make sure you read up on what to do if anything goes wrong as thats the biggest part of the lot making sure your puppy's and the mum is safe, good luck and keep us posted

Good book isn't it? I've read it so many times now from front to back! Yes it will be my first time breeding if she is.... Wouldn't it be good if they did a doggy home pregnancy test!

No i haven't joined any forums, will have to look into that  I'm home all day, so will be around to look after the pups (if she is pregnant) & have checked out www.epupz.co.uk & there are hardly any cavalier king charles pups in kent, so should be easy to get homes for them (although i would keep one). They're such a good breed as they are really good natured :-D Am thinking about taking her to the vets tomorrow as i am so impatient & want to know one way or the other

yea i got sammy from epupzs its always a good idea to try have homes for the puppy's befor they are ready to go as a lot of people make that mistake of having 5+ puppy's and no homes

I know, the books suggest to advertise as soon as the puppies are born & allow viewings from 4 weeks, so if she is i'll have a little bit of time  They are such an easy breed to find homes for i think i know a few people who would want one already

The way I can tell if they have puppies is, when she's walking away from you, if you can see (between her back legs) the udder droops each side...... "UU" that sort of shaped udder..

Thats how I notice.

Good luck xxx

Just checked her, and it is as you said, but if you press upwards her stomache feels hard. I don't know if i am explaining it really well  So does that seem like she is? Thanks
