I had a gromit as a child, my hearing is pretty much back to normal in my right ear now.

I remember the morning it fell out, it looks like a little cotton reel.

I didn;t realise they took them out, I thought they came out naturally?

gromits are the little cotton reel things that they put in ur ears when u have hearing probs they fall out naturally
adanoids i think they are in your nose or throat not sure why they take them out, they just said they will check size of them whilst under general anashetic

I had this done as a kid, many years ago. Mum has always said I didn't need it and said I was just lazy and didn't notice any difference after

My 5 year old had it all done last year and sice his hearing has improved soo much speech is better but not 100% speech therapist says he's fine for his age so i'm not overly worried and he it was great both at the hospital and afterwards he was a star never complained once the adenoids was useless as i ended having to give him medicine for 2 months to make his breathing and snoring better. goodluck xx

My eldest is on his 2nd set of Gromits and also recently had his adenoids out. Didn't have any speech problems but was developing glue ear and the adenoids were so swollen they added to the problem so they whipped them out at the same time. Really quick and easy operation and home same day. :)

He still bloody snores though.

His hearing is perfect now btw and once this lot fall out then job done.

my son is 6 now,i have been complaing of his hearing since he was 3,he would press his ear to the speaker on the tv etc
he constantly had ear infections and doc diagnosed him with glue ear
after that he was referred to hospital he had one hearing test and he was just pressing the buttons like it was a game,i told the lady he wasnt hearing the noises but she just said he probably does hear fine and its just background noise as i have alot of kids??
i complained about her and asked to see another doc but the health visitor suggested i wait for the school hearing test, school also noticed his hearing or lack of it and he started on speech therapy
after he failed miserably on the school hearing test he was referred back to hospital, failed another 2 hearing tests and then he was refered back to see the doc he saw in the very begining, she advised leaving it another year to see if hearing was better,we told her we were not happy to wait and wanted a referal to ENT which she said she would do
recently my sons speech therapist phoned me and asked if it was ok to write to ent about my sons hearing
we had his appointment last month with ent and they told us the other doc had not referred my son and that he failed badly in both ears
he is now on the waiting list (he is now 6)

his speech has been affected and his teacher has told me he is v well behaved but doesnt hear commands and will just follow what the other children are doing ie at tidy up time

he speaks very nasaly and always sounds bunged up so im unsure if thats the hearing causing the problem with the speech or the adanoids or both

Sorry that you've had to wait for so long. That's bad :-(

My eldest was just under 3 when he had his first grommets which stayed in for about 9 months.......he's now almost 5 and had the 2nd lot and his adenoids in January this year.

When he kept getting persistant ear infections the Docs had him down ENT quick sharp.

well hopefully he will only need the one lot
they have told me it will be a shock to him as his hearing has been low for so long they said his hearing was flat!
thanks for all your advice,is it obvious when they come out or is it just luck?
i mean will i just come across a little tube thing one day and realise its from his ear or do they feel them pop out?

They don't feel anything as they just drop out. If you're lucky you'll find them on the pillow but usually they are never to be seen again...........they are just tiny little white tubes and seem to vanish.

It's random when they come out.........it can be anything from 6 months to a year.

Hope it makes a big difference. :)

depending on what is wrong with your sons hearing really, my little guys was picked up at 3 and was monitored ever 3 to 6 months, on each visit it was pretty much the same but was told they do not like to put gromits in before the age of6/7 as glue eye can correct itself by then, he has other ear problem that cannot be sorted but also had glue ear, on our last vist (hes 7 now) we where told the glue ear had passed and he would not need gromits, he is now only going to be seen yearly, so all went well hear
