Quick google found this

You should definitely get the Egyptian pounds. (They are directly linked to the USD anyway).

Having lived in Egypt for a couple of years as a foreigner, I know that pulling out a dollar note will have the price of any goods or service multiply with 10.

Local currency is always the best. You wouldn't bring Egyptian pounds to the US, would you..? :-)

Where in egypt?

We took some Egyptian, the rest in Sterling. The exchange from sterling to Egyptian was better out there than in the uk (by about 20% )

They have their own currency, the Egyptian pound lol

I agree with Titchimp.

Take very small amount of Egyptian money with you, and then get it changed once there. Lots of money changers, and u'll get better rate

Yes, I think we all know that. Most hotels and restaurants prefer foreign currency though. I was wondering which was the current favoured foreign currency.

They prefered the local currency when I went this year (contrary to what I had read online).

Stay away from the back streets and poorer areas if shopping the shopkeepers can be a bloody nightmare and will not take no for an answer.

PS - You must go diving, absolutely amazing, if in the Sharm region use Aquarius - I did two trips one through the tour operator and the other with Aquarius and the one with Aquarius was the better organised with far less waiting around
(note you have to have a PADI open water cert. to scuba dive at Ras Mohammed).
