I had a clio turbo diesel and it was forever breaking down or losing power while on the road.....

then m8 of mines had a laguna 56 plate and it suddenly started overheating and within minutes was on fire!!!!.....

I then had a Vauxhall Vectra B that had 238,000 miles on it and every single part I replaced was through wear and tear and I never had any probs with it at all in 6 years, and I was driving all over the UK in it.

I would never buy a Renault again.

The OP is looking at an X-type, none of the above models. The X-type clearly has an old person image and although I have never driven or even been in one, the S-type I looked at was way off the standard I hoped for.

Had a Megane 1.9 dci 5dr with full glass roof (but not the convertable) for 18 months, loved the car, had a few problems common to Meganes, of couse.

lol....fair shout......that should be enuf tho to tell the OP not to go for an x-type jag then.....another more non old-blokey type jag should suffice.....

I cant afford high end sporty cars.....I gambled my cash with a 407......and to be honest...the jury is still out....I'd rather have kept by S-Plate vectra B and got it fixed even though it was a banger. :-D

Edit : and my name isnt Steven!!! lol

I've got a Renault Megane CC, things to look out for............................

Make sure all of the lights and indicators work. The bulbs are a real bitch to change, the front indicators require removal of the front bumper to access. The headlights can be accessed with great difficulty from a hatch in the front wing but you need to remove the wheel.

When starting from cold listen for any undue rattling, the "de-phasing" pulley on the camshaft has been known to fail. The engine sounds like it is dragging a chain for about 5 seconds then goes quiet. Camshaft belts require changing at 72000 miles, don't allow it to go much beyond this!

Make sure the roof mechanism is smooth and takes about 30 seconds, sensors have been known to fail. The boot has a cover that needs to be in place before the roof will open, it is mesh and pulls across into lugs; one car I looked at these lugs were broken and the switches had been gagged so that the roof would open even if the boot was full. The roof only fits if the boot is half full!!!

Don't expect it to be quick, to give the car structural strength, they have made the car weigh the same as a main battle tank!!!! Expect creaks and groans as even with the extra weight the car is quite flexible.

Avoid the "Extreme" version, it is the base model and usually comes without air con, traction control and steering wheel stereo controls. The "Dynamique" version is the better specced version.

Clutch judder is a common thing on these cars, use it as a bargaining chip to reduce the cost.

Cheap tyres equals bad handling, decent tyres improve things dramatically. Pot holes really unsettle the car, if you hit a pot hole under braking expect trouble. The car understeers like mad just for good measure.

It's a good looking 4 seat convertible, it isn't a sports car and it does have its faults. But a decent 2004 car can be picked up for £6k, a 2005 car for £6.5k. Post 2006 they made some changes and prices are still strong, expect to pay £8k plus.

Buy a megane at your peril. I bought from new 4 years ago and had 5!!!! coils replaced.

i have a 03 jag x type 2.0se - its a great drive looks stunning, however sometimes does feel like an "old man car" considering i am only 23. I am going to exchange this soon to get something abit sporty.

I must add relaibility is fantastic, motorway driving is great but could do with abit more juice in and around town.

Why would you consider buying a Renault? It's French!! lol

i ended up buying a hard top convertible peugeot 307 cc in maroon
