Hi, I have a sony bravia kdl24000 and an advent 5301, my vga cable just arrived this morning but when i connect it all i get is "no sync"? I know I need the 3.5mm jack cable which hasn't arrived yet but i thought that was just for sound so shouldn't i still get somthing showing up on screen?

i had the same problem - its a pain in the a$$

On your laptop desktop, right click and go to graphics options (this is for vista btw) and there should be a setting somewhere in that menu that shows the display of the TV and the Laptop. You have to select the TV as default and it should work

had a little look in the display settings via Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Personalization/DisplaySettings and I can get my desktop background to flash up on the TV for 2seconds then it says out of range and then the TV goes onto stand by, can't see where to turn Tv settings to default tho.

Often pressing Function + F4 will quicly look for an external monitor. Works like that for my Dads, Works, Previous Works and sisters. (Yes all diffrent models)

Failing that When At work I used to have problems with projectors and a quick fix was to plug in the projector (or tv for you) close the laptop (so It went into hibernate) then open the laptop and start up.

Tried your suggestions Vimes but still nothing, thought this would be a simple plug n play.......will it matter that i don't have the audio lead? could that be my problem?

I take it you tried re-setting the laptop with the Tv plugged in

and tried looking for external hardware

and tried changing the screen reolution (getting desperate here)

Out of range suggests that your refresh rate set on your laptop may not be compatible with the TV. Try changing this
