Are the network drivers enabled on your PC? If not, it won't be using the ehthernet port. Check to see if there are any lights above the network socket on the PC and if so, are they flashing?

oh dear, might be tricky to have two active connections, do you have a spare pc or laptop to access forums with?, if so uninstall the usb kit from pc, shut down and reboot with only ethernet connected.
from there use a command prompt to check connection to router with command ipconfig,
this should give you details of connection on local area connection such as default gateway, if there are no numbers in there your machine is not talking to router

What it'd be helpful if we knew what trouble you were having? From your comments I guess you've got an appropriate cable and found a slot to plug it in, but beyond that what's the issue?

If you're using windows 2000/XP then what do you have in the networks and connections folder? If you're using Vista what does the network and sharing centre tell you that you're connected to?

ok, when the ethernet is connected to the modem and pc, the ethernet light is not green on the modem
also
in the network connection window is:
Local area connection with a red X

and

1394 Connection with no rd X

I know I'm being a little vague but i know sod all about this:?

I had this a while ago with my moms old parcard. In the end i ran the setup disk that comes with the ntl modem just past the part where you choose if you want usb or ethernet. Choose ethernet and let it run, when it moves on to the next step just quit out and that should be that.

This worked for me so hope it will for you!

Plug it in to the ethernet port, click start, run, type "cmd" press enter, then type "ipconfig /all" and paste the results here.

ok first of all, right click on my computer, go to hardware page then device manager, see the list of devices?, click the little plus sign next to network adapters and tell us what you have in there
