Having trouble updating iPad!

spikeyjacko Avatar

I was going to try update my iPad to 4.2, and jailbreak ( I'm currently running 3.2 and jailbroken )
However, I'm struggling to update to 4.2 ( Apple keeps asking to verify, and then says it's timed out or the build is not eligible for my iPad )
Can anyone help at all??

I dont think Apple are signing below 4.3 anymore, so unless you have shsh already saved you cant install 4.2.
#2
Ah that's rubbish :p!
Hmm looks like I might be sticking to 3.2 then!

Download the ipa for your idevice from here IPHONE or IPAD

Then edit your hosts file to point saurik's server, 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com (as per image below) who will sign it off the update for you then click on the shift key and restore to locate your downloaded 4.2 ipa and run it that way.

Worked for me and then I used Greenpois0n to JB it. I then added cydia, appsync, installalous and done a restore to resinstall all of my apps.

DCX the OP states that they are already jailbroken. I would assume that they saved the SHSH aka made their life easy when they done the JB in the first place. Fingers crossed they have, thought I would throw the above in as nothing was mentioned

I am so confused lol!

I don't quite understand what is meant by edit your hosts??
I'm making myself sound rather stupid here lol!

1. Go to the Start menu and choose Run. Type the following in the Run dialog box:
For Windows NT and Windows 2000
C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc

For Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

2. Click the OK button (This should open a window with several files in it.)
3. Find the file called ‘hosts’ and double–click it. If prompted, specify that you would like to choose a program to open the file with from a list of programs.
Choose ‘Notepad’ from the list of available programs.

Just in case I would make a backup copy of the hosts file before you do anything / changes to the original, just copy paste the file to your desktop.

Then edit the original hosts file with 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com added, as per the image above then close the open screen choose save. Then try the above installation instructions

I'm on a mac, sorry!!
I've managed to add the host, and I think saved it, as when I run the command to edit hosts, it's there!
However, Apple still say I'm not eligible for the build :(

Did you click on Make my life easier" when you first JB your ipad?

I think I did!

Check to see if your hosts file appears twice in your /etc directory just to make sure it saved in the right format. Not 100% of macs btu if you see 2 hosts it maybe that the file was saved as a txt file instead of the system file type.

If the above is correct I would hazard a guess that your SHSH wasn't saved when you installed Cydia the first time around.

Have a look and see what cydia says it has saved in the app dashboard, should be SHSH IOS 4.01, 4.2.1 at the top just above the logo or use tinyumbrella. This should tell you if you saved your SHSH files

Should be possible then. Reboot your computer and start the process again.

) Download the iOS 4.2 IPSW file for your iPad. The direct download link from Apple is here.

2) Open iTunes on your computer and connect your iPad using the USB cable.

3) Hold the Option key and then click on the “Check for Update/Update” button.

4) A Dialog screen will appear prompting you for the location of the IPSW file you downloaded. Find the file in the file browser and select the IPSW file.

5) iTunes will now use the iPSW file and update your iPad to the selected IPSW file.

6) the JB etc

DCX Tinyumbrella has the option within the advanced tab / screen to auto adjust your host file and it will also unedit it for you too.

I've already tried rebooting, and still to no avail :(

At the moment I am stumped as the above ip address and process is the same that I have used recently myself as Apple wouldn't sign off on 4.2 when I needed to get my idevice exchanged. As a precaution i kept it at 4.2 so I could JB it should they have refused me an exchange, which I am glad they didn't.

Not 100% if it will make a difference but do you have a windows pc available to try it on?

Installed everything and edited hosts on Windows 7 - Still nothing ( It didn't say no eligible, just stuck on the verifiying bit )
The same with Mac - I might just update anyway, as I was planning on visiting an apple store next week to try get a replacement!

Haven't come across anything different to assist, if you are trying to get a replacement I guess the 4.3 update it will have to be, considering that will be what's on the replacement. As The porter states an untethered JB should be along soon.
