You cannot play them on a ps3 - no way.

You need a HD-DVD player - have you got an Xbox 360?

the ps3 does not play hd dvd's, the only one the plays hd dvd's is the xbox 360 witth the add-on hd-dvd drive, they are 2 totally different formats, but both are hd,:-D

You wouldn't be able to use the drive with the PS3, there's no way to watch HD DVDs through a PS3 regardless of any extra hardware you buy. To be honest I don't think it's worth going down the route of getting an HD DVD drive for your laptop, even if it has suitable performance (you'll need a reasonable C2D and preferably a dedicated graphics card) getting the software running for it can be a real pain in the neck. You'd be much better off spending the money purchasing the blu-ray versions and selling the HD DVDs.

Blu-ray prices are starting to get better particularly if you want a new film although unfortunately they're nothing like the HD DVD clearout prices. I did go with HD DVD initially and bought a few more when they went super cheap, tried to run them through an external HD DVD drive on a blu-ray PC but so far it's not having any of it and I've decided it's not worth it. If this was a few months back when most places were selling HD DVDs for pennies and standalone players were going quite cheap it might have been worth going down that route but now it's not.

To be honest, I can't remember - I think it was mainly the versions of Powerdvd that were meant to work with the drive, the PC can play back blu-ray although this still needs any dvd as for some reason the system doesn't recognise the HDCP links.

Powerdvd 8 and 9 can't do HD DVD's only Power dvd 7.

Yes I know (hence I said 'versions'), even tried the specific japanese one I think it is that's supposed to do it but still no go.
