I agree, a little cheaper and HD-DVD players will become worth buying as upscalers and also a player to take advantage of the massivley discounted films that should start appearing.

AFAIK, HD-DVD is not region coded - there were plans to introduce coding but I doubt that will happen now. Perhaps someone could clarify?

Sorry dandoc, as far as I know the EP-30 (& EP-35) are region 2 locked for DVDs and there is no hack or firmware updates to remove that restriction.

There is a firmware hack for the HD-E1 to make it region free.

I'd get a dedicated 2.0 North American player towards the end of the year personally. That's what I'm waiting on, hopefully the BlueRay camp will of decided on a spec too by then or I might end up waiting for a 3.0 player...

People say blu ray has won but you ahve to own a ps3 basically to have it
Whereas the players are like £40 now for hd-dvd and with everything lower how comes companies wont understand its the better format and go back over to them

Be hilarous if it did

News tommorrow

Warner and paramount and universal abandon blu ray and re sign with hd-dvd

Yay

I agree, Toshiba should of always sold the HD DVD players as DVD players instead of throwing in the towel.

Obviously they would of had to take a bit off of the price to get them almost in line with upscalers, but you could of ninjad a lot of hardware into homes. Similar to what the PS3 has done for the blues

My point was, I wouldn't by a European BlueRay player. Pick up an American one

Yep totally agree - blu ray uk selection is absolute rubbish

Same when dvds first came out barely anything was out in the uk took at least 2 years to release a lot of quality titles

And how much would they have sold that for? They got it as cheap as they could, to the point where they were already taking a substantial loss with each player.

IF alot of stores are already reducing the HD-dvd prices i wouldnt be suprised if they chose not to stock any of the 'new' releases.

I guess it all depends on the situation but i dont have enough HDMI ports on my tv, or the space around it to have both HD-dvd and BLuray and for that reason i would rather pay the extra for a format i will still be able to buy in a year.

I think blurays will be more expensive for now but the resale value in a few months will be in line with the extra cost to purchase them, rather than HDdvd. I would imagine there are more HDdvds in the Uk than players so there will be no shortage of them ;-)

Well for any xbox 360 owners the console is a DVD player + upscaler before the HD-Dvd addon
#27
i think personally if it does die and dissapear...that all dvd units and hd dvds should be refunded...its been a complete waste of money for some ppl if this is the case...and they shouldnt be out of pocket just for supporting hd dvd

Bad news for some releases on HD

I have read the following...

Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed that March 4th will mark the last titles the studio releases on the HD DVD format. All titles announced with release dates after March 4th have been canceled for their HD DVD releases (the DVD releases will stay on schedule). This includes the March 11th release of Dreamworks' 'Bee Movie' and the April 1st release of 'Sweeney Todd'

Well if they hadn't bundled discs, that would of saved a shilling. Not much, but every little helps. They weren't far off a good DVD upscaler anyway, so there wasn't that much of a price margin.

The hardware was selling for silly money out in Asia, as you know with all electrical products. It doesn't cost that much, it's based on DVD tech afterall.

Not that many HD and Blueray units have been sold, compared to the potential market out there, so a small loss now is a big profit later.

It wasn't marketed very well either... 'The Look and Sound of Perfect' sounds like it was literally translated from Japanese. I don't think anyone was really aware that you could get combo discs either, or play standard DVD's on the hardware.
#33
Well game have reduced their price on the hd-dvd add on from £115 to £40. quite cheap id imagin, especially if you have stuff to trade in!!
#34
I think what sony should do in a few months is say that they have enabled the blu ray player in the ps3 to play hd-dvds to entice people to upgrade to it

Just a thought

As really hd-dvd is the same tech as dvd so it wouldnt be hard to use it ina blu ray player

That would go back on all the money sony the blueray camp spent on the movie studios. Sony would then have to pay the HD DVD group royalties for every PS3 sold.

Can a PS3 even play DVDs?

Can a PS3 even play DVDs?

Of course it can, and better then most dedicated upscalers that cost in excess of £300.
