Just wondering for those of you who have cashed in on the bargain HD-DVD's out there...

how many of you use your PC to watch hd dvd's.
And what playback software are you using... (do all your hd dvd's play)?

Greetings. :)

Power dvd 7 works fine (apparently v8 has "issues").

My preference is for Totalmedia Extreme.........you can download a full working 7 day trial from the Arcsoft website.

Is there any free HD playback software available? I don't mean from torrents, but freeware stuff?

Thanks for feedback.
Apparently you can modify powerdvd8 to playback hd dvd too. I can't verify this as I don;t have a supported graphics card yet.

Anyone use powerdvd 6.5?

Or failing that... any cheap hd dvd playback s/w.
$119.99 for arcsoft total media seems a little steep to playback hd dvds which were bought for their bargainous qualities.

Yeah, I probably am asking a for a little too much by expecting free software :-D And I agree, why pay £60 to be able to play £4 HD DVDs on a £18 player?

Costs about the same as Power dvd ultra and less bloatware.

The xbox360 hd dvd drive can
be used with your PC.
be bought with 2 hd dvd drives for £24.99

Also you can
sell the universal remote it comes with back to Gamestation
get more than the pitiful £1 trade they offer by using their pricematch promise (use blockbuster who offer £6... £7 back)

So you get drive and 2 hd-dvds for £17.99
Alternatively if you just get the drive and sell back remote you can get even get the drive for £12.99!

Happy with my LG.

HD/Blu-ray playback all in one.....and a dvd writer too of course.
Plus I read that the xbox drive sounds like a jet engine in playback mode.........would rather hear the movie :p

My 2 are almost silent, they make a bit of noise when plugged into the xbox but if there is a game in the main xbox drive it can be quite loud.

Where did you get your LG combo drive from?
I'm jealous for blu-ray exclusive titles like casino royale and hidden dragon, crouching tiger!

hmm got the software with the LG drive, cyberlink i think, and then got a ANY DVD (HD version) and loaded it. Works a treat!!

Play or Scan offer the best deal.

Bundled power dvd is only 2 channel audio..........you have to pay to upgrade it.
Power dvd is a bit of a resource hog too.

You read wrong - Thats only the actual xbox console the HD-DVD drive is damn near silent.

And if you want to watch a movie you want to watch it loud, not on ****** small volume 15 you want it on 63/64 so you wouldn't hear the 'jet engine' in the background:thumbsup:.

You may like it LOUD...........as do I.
But no fun when the kids have it blaring when I'm in bed after a night shift :p

Would rather get a ps3 and run yellow dog/boinc :w00t:

PowerDVD 8 does work with HDDVD you just download a 5 megabyte rar file easily available and extract contents to main folder.

I'm hoping to pick up something that comes with cyberlink powerdvd.

Perhaps a new graphics card though I don;t want to give up my tv capabilites of my current one

yeah we got the LG Blue RAY writer and HDDVD rom drive, cost like £140 i think from scan. Yeah everything works staright out of the box. Also changed the gfx with a ATI3850 512Mb DDR3 with onboard HD decoding, keeps the CPU free for menial tasks like checking the date, and running the clock!!! lol
