hi all, i was recently gunna get 1 of those acer revo's for 1080p playback to my tv but now they out of stock, i was wondering if my machine was powerful enough to output directly from my pc to the tv, i got an hp pavillion amd64 3200, with 2 gig of ram, it has got a Video Adapter Gigabyte Radeon HD 2400 Pro with 256mb of ram and runs on xp pro, i dont think the graphics card got hdmi output btw, just need to know if i could get this running to the tv via hdmi cheaply or if its not worth the hastle, my tv's about 5 meters away from the pc base.

i stream to my 360 at the moment but the machine cannot transcode quick enough via ps3mediaserver and jerks a fair bit!
cheers in advance

DVI to HDMI cable. Should be fine

My netbook can transcode 1080p fine. It's not the CPU!

I use one of these to control mine

There are much cheaper alternatives but this is a very nice piece of kit :)

Sounds like your pc could easily handle it, I use Mediaportal - http://www.team-mediaportal.com/ have a media style pc under the tv with tvcards and it works really well. I also use a windows mce remote for the media functions.

for some reason i cant play a 12gb mkv directly on the pc, i swear it used to and this a pretty clean install of xp, just itunes utorrent installed, i think i got cccp codec pack, and i got problems with vlc, xbmx, media player classic, they all jerk and struggle, any ideas?

Your CPU won't handle it but I believe the 2400 has support for decoding h.264 and VC-1 (but not MPEG4). I don't know if VLC supports it but Media Player Classic should do - are you using the old version or the home cinema version?

Which format is the mkv encoded in?

That looks quite nice! Not sure If I've already seen this or a similar peice of software.

Anyone used "My Dreambox" with it?

Havnt used my HTPC for absolutely ages, this'll give it a new lease of life! (Cant beleive I spent a fortune building a decent C2D PC a while back and not really use it!)

Any tips on do's and don'ts, or limitations?

well somehow i got the 12 gig mkv to run quite smooth now, think coreavc codec sorted that bit out, im gunna go the xbmc route at 1st, i was messing about with it for hours yesterday and it seems a gorgious piece of software once u get used to the layout etc, waiting for my dvi-hdmi lead to let it loose on the tv, heres another question, my tv is only 1080i so will my graphics card detect this is the maximum output? or will my tv come up with screen mode not supported?, cheers

It will probably do so correctly, but if you have both screens plugged in you can always change it down to the appropriate resolution anyway.
