You are right, the picture quality should be good - in what way is it 'awful', is it particularly blurry or are the colours completely out? Is the laptop definitely running at the TV's native resolution? Are you cloning the displays or are they running independently?

iv tried running it at 1366 x 768 and all the icons still look very blurry, but the desktop background looks perfect which is very strange. iv tried both cloning the displays and also running them independently and it makes no difference. im sure its something small that i am doing wrong but i just cant put my finger on it!!

I think you might need to choose the correct setting using the TV's options rather than your laptop's. The HDMI input may require 720p or 1080i [just a guess here].
