The group is lowering prices on more than 1,000 items from Monday and promising to pay shoppers "double the difference" on products found cheaper at Wal-Mart owned Asda.

Sounds good, I like Tesco but they can be a bit more expensive than Asda. Heat added for sharing.

Theyll need to lower more than 1000 prices to compete with asda!

Read an article in yesterdays Independent, The Chief Executive is now stepping down 'after 32 years with Tesco and the last 14 as CE' the quietly spoken, modest, understated...Liverpudlian..hands over an empire 5237 stores in 15 countures to a new CE on 1st March.

Pre tax profits grew by 10.1 % for the year to the end of Feb 2010 on sales of £62.54bn.

Guess the new guy (Phil Clarke) wants to come in and make a headline.

I think they can afford to give us a few more deals.

Indeed, the standard prices at Tesco are ridiculously high - probably higher than any other supermarket. But they have to be, if you want to run so many BOGOF sales without going bust. (And the sales are often quite good, although you have to be really careful there, too.)

Of course the big question is: who is right? ASDA claims to be cheaper than Tesco, Tesco wants to be cheaper than ASDA, but only one of the can be the cheapest.

I used to have Home Deliveries from Tesco's but I've found I get cheaper and better quality deals from Sainsburys now, Sainsbury's even email me more discount voucher codes as well!

Voted cold -reason . this is simply a phoney price war between 2 savvy organisations . It relies heavily on the basis that us Brits by nature do not :
1) complain
2) wish to seem petty enough to ask for a measley 20p back
3) have the time or the inclination to engage in price comparison either in-store or on line

Dont be duped . Just do what I do- complain, complain, complain and get recompensed

We shop at ASDA and try out Tesco once in a while ... and every time we do, despite doing a pretty much identical shop, it comes out £5 - £10 more expensive. I'd rather have cheap prices in ASDA than Buy One Get One Free's that I'll never use or don't really want.

I run our receipts through the price guarantee website and it always shows it as cheaper by far.

bout time the launched a we are a rude don't care less guarantee. would be closer to the mark lol

ASDA vs TESCO. ooooooooooooooooh... Lets hope that them pushing their prices down doesn't mean they push down the prices they pay suppliers =(
#19
the fact that the prices may only be a range of products that asda dont sell lol, like vice versa
#20
So it's just on these 1000 items? They're effectively copying the enormously unpopular "Value to Shout About" campaign J Sainsbury ran in the 90s then.
#21
None of the checkout staff at my local ASDA seem to know what to do with the vouchers when I take them in...seems not many people bother with it as 90% of the time I get a voucher from the price guarantee website, and its not always tesco thats cheaper either (it's been waitrose on more than one occasion).

Will be interested to see the small print of this one.

Surely they should just scan them into the checkout? Where I work, Waitrose, we just click the 'Pay' button and then we can scan all the vouchers the customer has. Simples. ASDA's checkouts do look quite old and outdated, they don't even have a proper screen on them >.<

Not really. Asda quite often advertise they are cheaper than Tesco on items that Tesco don't even sell. The figures are far from as accurate as the adverts make out!

I prefer Tesco because the clubcard points system just suits me better, but find both the stores have cheaper items than each other.

Tesco don't pay for the BOGOF offers their suppliers do, they squeeze their suppliers for every penny and make huge profits because of it, as you can tell I am not a fan.

so a hot deal is the fact tescos may be price matching asda on 1000 products? I dont get it!

tescos always come out far cheaper than asda for me anyway via mysupermarket, Probably cos all I ever buy are their bogofs in bulk :)

and quite often get £10 off deliveries too

Its that they'll double the difference rather than match it.. but yeah I guess in effect it'll just be them trying to keep as close to their prices as possible.

I usually use the BOGOF deals to make it cheaper too.

Went into Tesco to buy a birthday cake and they had sign 'Me to You Birthday cake Tesco price £7.00 Asda price £6.49! took the sign and went to customer services asking should i go to Asda? They could believe it! I could and went else where!

Landing pages for groceries, entertainment and direct all still state double points. I should check your sources.

Just been through my asda receipts for the month...only a couple actually came out cheaper elsewhere, so happy about that (none at Tesco). What I'm really chuffed about is that, despite being cheaper, because of their '10% cheaper' promise, I've just printed off £12.54 of price guarantee vouchers :) Beat that Tesco!

Will stick to ASDA for everyday shopping, but I can see the tesco offer being good if ASDA have a good offer on something that tesco aren't matching e.g. something half price at ASDA will work out free if bought at full price from tesco

I recently did a shop in ASDA as I was nearby and believed it would be cheaper than my usual Tesco. I spent £50 on groceries and figured I might as well try the asda price guarantee. I was very surprised to find the only supermarket that was more expensive was waitrose. Tesco was a few pence cheaper and surprisingly Sainsbury the cheapest. Still I got a voucher from ADSA through the 10% cheaper thing, although given the distance to the ASDA I probably won't use it!

Just like the con that is the Waitrose Tesco price match ****. Waitrose only price match Tesco on things where Tesco is way above the other supermarkets and thus uncompetitive. Total swiz.
