I know subtitled movies/tv shows arent everyones cup of tea,but you really are missing out on some quality stuff.

"Carlos" tells the true story of the international hit man/terrorist carlos the jackal-based on extensive research-a 3 parter just screened on canal+ in France and soon to be available on pay per view in america.

Mrs barky and I have watched the full 5 and a half hours over the last 2 days and it is just mind blowingly good!

Similar to mesrine in its depth of research, the script and acting are way better than 99 percent of tripe we get on tv here or in america-the show of the year so far!

If you like good tv/film and arent bothered about subtitles this is one to watch.

Just watched A Prophet this week and this sounds excellent. Only been able to source French language without subs so far. Any pointers please?

Of course! Cheers. Found some subbed versions of eps 2 & 3. Thanks again for the heads up. Be good to have something decent to watch. Had to endure "the Spy Next Door" last night (although it was a wee bit funny)

yes but remember the sub files have to have the EXACT same name as the movie file so you need to rename.

I renamed the 3 movie parts to carlosone/carlostwo/carlosthree

then rename the subs to carlosone.srt/carlostwo.srt/carlosthree.srt

drop the srts into same folder as the matching avi file and away you go

either convert to dvd with the subs embedded,or mux the subs into the divx for divx standalones,or play on pc with subs enabled in your player menu.

i've managed to sort it out.

got a usb point in my tv, that'll play the files but won't show any sub's (lg telly)

but, if i plug the usb into my dvd/divx player, it does play it wth sub's.

any idea how i could get it to work just via the tv? pic is a bit better that way.

thanks very much barky, i had already rep'd you, but if i could, i'd rep you a little bit more.

my tv doesnt have a usb port so not sure how this would work tbh-my dvd player does tho-I found the pic improved by using convertx to convert to dvd with the subs embedded and then playing the discs in my lg blu ray which upscales.

cheers

i'll probably just watch it as is, don't really have the time to be fammying about with conversion and burning. pic is perfectly watchable via the stick. thanks again for the heads up, watched about 5 mins of it just to check it out and hooked already, now just have to find a slot when she isn't watching jeremy kyle!

another great french drama :-

ENGRENAGES

AKA "SPIRAL"

Sad state of affairs when both the USA and France now produce much better drama than us :(

Some of the 'drama' ITV is producing is pathetic extremely padded out naval gazing borefests (e.g. Father & Son)

Watched first episode of Carlos last night and is pretty good but prefer Spiral.

Just seen the trailer for this on lovefilm, it looks quality, but it says its in cinemas on 22 Oct - surely this can't be the case as the run time is 5 hours and is surely better suited to dvd! can't find any details of it being shown in cinemas in the UK

that states a release date of November 1, 2010, yet Lovefilm state it will be released in cinemas on the 22nd Oct and have no details of a dvd/blu ray release yet. Strange

would need to be a limited arthouse release unless they have cut it to ribbons for cinema release-btw rory-I know you like your french movies-check 22 bullets(l'immortel)-excellent!

already reserved it on Lovefilm on the basis on your recommendation Barky ;)! Unfortunately its not out till late January, it does look class though.

Will have to get this Jackal, might buy it as it looks like the type of thing I'll be telling anyone who'll listen to watch but unless I lend it to them they never will!

heard the director talking about this on radio 6 today. Looks like theres two formats - the full length 5 hour one and a 2 and a half hour version. Dont think any cinema will show the full length one so will wait for dvd

yep-they have cut it to ribbons for the cinema release! absolute shame tbh-the pacing of the 3 parter is perfect, and really delves into the characters-glad I watched the full version-cant imagine how they could cut it to half!
