Friend of mine listed an item on gumtree for sale and has had a few emails back regarding it, and someone has replied offering full asking price + extra for the P&P.

Now heres the catch, I personally think its a scam but my friend doesnt so I thought id ask here to show him..

They said they can pay via PayPal immediately and if the item could be shipped to West Africa as a present for someone? They're based in the UK and want it shipped abroad.

My friend is saying that Paypal is secure and surely things wouldnt go wrong with it? but im not so sure.

Money laundering scam where they claim goods have never been sent. Get the items, then the refund goes back into an account in the UK or US, the money then becomes clean as its from a reputable source.

It might be legit, but like you I would be wary

Scam

You may get an email that looks like it has been sent by paypal saying that the funds will be released to your account after you provide a tracking number for the item you provide the number but wont get anything into your account as its a scam there are a couple more scams like this.

cant see any problems if you are paid from the person first, just to be safe you could maybe withdraw the money from the account right away and save all the emails too.

dont really see how it could be dodgy, just make sure the funds are withdrawn before sending the item:thumbsup:

When i place a advert in gumtree why is it the only people interested in buying it for the full asking price plus more for posting always comes from africa :whistling: i have a rule now of only posting to the uk

Yeah I thought Paypal's secure but there might be some way of conning my friend out of the money once he's sent the item? OR there being some customs charge or something?

So you wouldnt do it?
Or would you see if you get the payment properly into the paypal account, withdraw and then send it?

RUN. RUN AWAY. Head for the hills. It's a scam. Probably stolen/fraudulent credit card or hacked Paypal account.

Go with your gut feeling, they're usually right.

I wouldnt do it myself as i feel that it is a scam. I take it that it is a high value item and this item couldnt be purchased in africa for the price your friend is selling it for.

As the above post says RUN RUN AND DONT LOOK BACK :-D

BTW is it for a high value item?

Its for a phone hes selling so yeah its a high value item (£150+)

Paypal is not worth a sook outside of Ebay.

Ebay owns Paypal and IS NOT a bank.

Therefore you will NOT get your money back if it goes wrong.

STEER CLEAR !! ;-)

He said if he gets it into his paypal account and then deposits it into his bank and closes the account, then sends out the item, wont that be fine?

No because Paypal can still do a chargeback to any bank account or credit/debit card that he's put on file with Paypal. Tell him not to be a silly boy, and tell this African guy to go forth and multiply.

Have a look here for a similar scam that i was talking about

Personally i'd tell the guy to do one.
No way would I send anything to africa. false/stolen credit card, item not recieved scam , phishing emails plus many many more possible scams. I wouldn't send it with the so called protection from ebay and that counts doubly when its outside ebay.

Its not worth the hassle avoid.

AVOID like the plague. This is a well known scam. I had a similar email once whilst selling a dvd player. Person was based in the UK and wanted it sending out to Nigeria for a 'cousins' wedding blah blah blah.
