if your trying to boot from the ext hard drive, simply go into the bios and set your 1st boot device as the external hard drive.
first, make sure you download the right version that suitable to be installed in you netbook.

Then, choose a software like UltraISO to write the OS to you external hard driver(should be USB) as a boot disk

Finally, enter into the bios when the netbook starts(usually pree DEL), go to the boot device menu, choose your external driver as the 1st boot device.

If everything is ok, your windows should start to install.
This is best done from a USB flash drive or external cd/dvd drive, when doing it from an external hard drive you need to make the partition its sat on bootable.
Have you set it up as bootable? Just copy and pasting the files won't do it, also you have to format it so will loose everything on the external hard drive, better to use a small memory stick. Also better to use normal XP, than that horrible pirate copy (with loads of needed bits stripped).

i haven't got a clue as my eldest son did it & he's gone out now :?
so it would be better to get a proper version then? i have young kids so if i remember right there was a thread on here on how to get it cheap :? does anyone know? thanks
Well you can use tinyxp, but I use a normal one on mine, when I tried tiny CP in the past, to make it run faster they'd removed essential parts, it lacked the ability to print and office wouldn't work on it either.

even though i've got linux on it at the mo can i get an upgrade version? as i know some people on here before said that they got it to do a complete install?
Yeah you can, have to do a work around though. Should be able to find one with a quick google.

thanks :) i'm rubbish with all this technical stuff
would this be ok?
just had a read through of this thread
& people are saying you can't get it to do a complete install for linux :?
i don't want to pay out for it & not be able to use it :?
Yup. Not sure how well Win 7 will run on a netbook, but it should be ok I think.

so would i be better off getting XP then? :?
