no matter what, all employers are looking for a representation of how they would like to present their company in your appearance. So be as smartly dressed as you can, shirt and tie minimum, a suit if you can, wont go unnoticed.

Interview experience....be yourself answer any question as in depth and honestly as you can (use some common sense in your answers). Do your homework on the company (shows interest)

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/StaticDisplay/includeName/AboutArgos.htm

Have some questions prepared that doesn't involve 'how much will I get paid', as this is a temporary position maybe ask 'will there be a possibility of a permanant position after xmas' (but dont look dissapointed if they say no)

oh, and good luck

Ultimo has covered just about everything I was gonna say, read up on Argos so you're prepared if they hit you with the "What can you offer to Argos" line.....
Most of all just be yourself :)

Thanks for your help, do you think I will be overdressed though, especially if others are just in jeans or just black trousers and a shirt.

If you feel uncomfortable in a suit - smart black trousers, shirt and tie will do perfectly. I have never seen anyone where I work get a job when they came in wearing jeans!

If I was a bloke going to an interview at argos, I'd wear smart black trousers, a nicely pressed clean shirt a plain tie, if you've got a smart jacket (not particularly a suit jacket) then wear it to travel in :) Those in jeans and stuff will look like they haven't made the effort.

I'd probably avoid asking them whether HUKD is a banned web address on the company computers...

They'll be looking for someone who is smart & polite i.e. someone that will look good in their store & who will be nice to customers.

BTW, Good luck!!!! And let us know how you got on.

Thanks very much, to everyone, Im just a little nervous, my first interview! I finished A levels this year, and all the jobs I have applied for needs 'experience'! Yep Im going to wear black trousers, white shirt and plain tie, I think. lol. I hope this interview isnt goin to be scary, its sounds like a group interview with activities, ahhh!

And if you get really stuck when they ask you if you have any questions to ask, try this one "why do you work for the company?" has never failed in my interviews.

Oh god they are the pits......however, remember to be honest, which includes actually telling the interviewers that you are feeling nervous as this is your 1st interview, and they should assist you through the process.....?? Unless they dont like you, then they might take the pee :w00t: :w00t:

I used to work for Argos and it seems that anyone who gets an interview will get the job. They ask set questions from a sheet for example "can you name a time that you had to deal with a tricky situation" - that’s not the exact question, but you hopefully get what I mean. It’s fairly straightforward. don't rush your answers and if you haven’t got a lot of work history relate it to your studies e.g. "one tricky situation was when i was doing some group coursework and one member wasn't pulling their weight" then expand and tell them what you did to resolve it.

Make sure that you talk a lot about team work and how well you get on with a variety of people from different backgrounds etc. They are mostly interested in team working skills.

If you get the job and want to stay on after the Christmas period then work hard and ask the managers if there's anything you can do for them when you aren't busy, if nothing else this will get you a good reference for future jobs.

Hope this helps,

Chris

That is usually one they will ask you....so be prepared for it! "You're the only company that isn't asking for experience" won't go down well!!! I'd probably say "whilst this is just a position over Xmas - I am interested in entering retail management and think it will be a great oportunity to learn>"

Then again, thats why I work for Royal Mail. hehe ! :)

Good luck with the interview mate...

There are a lot of 'standard questions' that you are likely to be asked. It's best not to rehearse answers (you'll just come across as fake), but have a read through these, and think about what you'd answer to them. The ones that are most difficult are 'tell us when you failed ...' or 'tell us your worst attribute ...'. For these, answer honestly (but not too honestly!!) , and show that you learned from the experience.

If there are group activities you need to show that you are taking part, can listen to others, and can lead when appropriate. Complementing your team-mates on work well done is a good idea, and encouraging those that aren't participating also goes down well.

Remember about the 'little things' - smile at or say hello to everyone you meet, knock before you open doors, hold doors open for others, don't play with your mobile or dash off for fag breaks, and finish the interview with 'thank you for your time, it's been nice meeting you' (it leaves a good impression)

Good luck - let us know how you get on

Thanks everyone, my interview (more like group fun time!) is tomorrow! Starting to get a little nervous now! lol.
#17
Bryan, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just be yourself, that is the only thing I can suggest.

good luck at the interview mate

Thanks everyone. Nope, my first interview like this, really hope I get it. Im always nervous bout things like this. I will let you know how it was when I get back.

Just got back, the interview was....ok. Well, if you can call it an interview. First we we split into teams, we had to introduce the person sitting next to us to the rest of the teams. Then we built a bridge out of building blocks, then we had a math and problem solving test, then we had to act out a advert for argos! Then filled in loads of forms.

There were twelve people there, and only two of us were dressed smart, the rest were in jeans and a t-shirt.

Hopefully I will get the job, I should know by the end of next week. There was twelve of us there, plus the manager told us there are more group interviews through the week, and there are only 6 vacancies!

Thanks to everyone who wished me good luck, I need it! lol
#24
Sounds as tho it went well! Lets hope you get a job, so you can give us all discount! :p

Any other interviews lined up 'just in case'??
#25
Glad to hear it went 'ok'.

It can be very annoying when you are expecting a 'full on' interview only to have an interview-lite :x Kind of feels like you've wasted your time ...

Anyway, I'm sure that the effort with the dress will have been noted. Fingers crossed for you :santa:

Thanks everyone, nope no more interviews lined up, I have put my application in a few argos' tho! I am also going to get a woolies and wilkinsons app forms tomorrow.

Don't Aldi / Netto pay really well for temporary jobs? I seem to remember hearing that a while ago... perhaps useful if there's one near you?
Or could you apply to be 'santas little helper' at a garden centre near you?
#28
I got the job! Woohoo! Thanks to everyone who wished me luck and contrubuted to this thread.

Well done :) Hope you enjoy the work.

I've never done a job interview in my life - only ever interviewed others so don't know what it's like from your side of the desk.
