I bought the Dell netbook from thread above and kept it until daughters Birthday. Every time I start it up it just 'hangs' with the hourglass symbol as though it is loading something. Started okay the first couple of times but just rebooted it and its hanging again?

Any ideas or should I call dell?

hi, I haven't done anything other than microsoft updates...I now have access to main screen but again it has hourglass over bottom of start menu and across to right hand side...it has been this way for over an hour?

[FONT=Verdana]Reboot the netbook and go into Safe Mode, hit the F8 key when Windows starts to load - it will load with basic device drivers and should allow you to access the Computer Management MMC via Administrative Tools; you can get to this via the Control Panel or via your Start Menu (dependent upon how you've configured your profile on the netbook).

Once your in there go to the Event Viewer, via System Tools, and look at the Application & System Event Logs - your basically looking for any error messages that it has listed from when your powering on the netbook (before you used the Safe Mode start-up) and then getting logged onto the desktop.

In addition to that what antivirus package are you running on your netbook?

Hi Scotty Boy, it's a brand new laptop so I haven't loaded anything onto it yet, it has the standard McAfee which has expired now...
it has the following in event viewer:
application - log - application error records
internet explorer - log - custom log error records
microsoft office diagnostics - custom log error records
microsoft office sessions - custom log error records
security - security audit records
system - system error records

[FONT=Verdana]Okay if you go into each of those logs and look at roughly the times you've started up & encountered the problems, does it show anything at all?

You should also consider uninstalling the McAfee Antivirus especially if it's expired - there are a number of free replacements out there that you can go for. I'll hunt out a list and see about pasting them in for you to look at & consider.

i just spoke with Dell and they told me to press control and F11 on start up which took me to a menu to completly restore system to factory settings. Hope it works, I had no software on the netbook anyway as new...

[FONT=Verdana]See how it goes but you definitely need to remove the McAfee Antivirus and replace it with another software, especially if it's expired.

Edit - Here's one to get the ball rolling but also Comodo Firewall and Antivirus is good, along with AntiVir.

thanks, already downloaded AVG few months back with key until 2018
I've removed McAfee and installed this now, seems to be working okay with system restore. I've repped you for your help
