Help building my sons website, Hes driving me mad Please!!!!!!!

So I bought a book for my eight year old son, building websites for over 50s, and now Im a bit stuck on where he needs to go next on publishing the web pages he created on Microsoft word. He has a home page and links on it, to other pages and thats about it really.

So in the book it says upload it onto several web servers at a monthly cost after a free trial period.

Its only for fun and his budget is minimal, but what are the alternatives please.

As a family we have two very basic professionally designed websites, both hosted free of charge on a friends server and one on the web designers server.

So firstly, how do I upload the pages with out using the pay sites and do I need to buy my son a http://www.???? Name?

Secondly, can we tag his site onto one of ours?

Thanks in advance, but I was ok at the beginning, but he has now surpassed my intelligence and I am now feeling too old and useless to help and come up with the right answers,

Thanks again in advance, Els

Help is at hand........ I will edit as I go to answer your points...

OK first question. Do you really need to use Word rather than a dedicated (but free) HTML editor. I say this because when word saves to HTML, it doesnt do a very good job of it!

For hosting, it really depends what you want. There certainly isnt any need to spend lots of money on a site thats going to be just for his personal viewing and friends. However, it would be cool to have a site called "www.yoursonsname.co.uk" or something along those lines. A .co.uk only costs about £6 for 2 years, so not a lot of money and would make a nice difference.

I'm happy to give you some space for you to host gratis.

To upload to the site, you will need some free software for "FTP" which is basically to get your pages into the holding directories the pages will be located.

To be honest, possibley the best way to go is to use a free template and add your own content. I can help you out there also. Ive quite a few located here on an unfinished project. It should also give a few useful tips in the html and css tag sections.

Just shout and I'll try to help out.

PS.... if you do reply and I havent responded, just drop me a PM.

He he. Service with a smile!:p

But seriously, just shout for anything you are stuck with or advice on the where and hows.

When you think of a few domains you might like to use, I'd recommend someone like 123-reg.co.uk Just click the link and enter your choices.

I suggest you exchange the 'Building Websites for over 50s' for 'Bulding Websites for under 10s'.

There's a good chance that your ISP provides some webspace, granted it'll be basic but that's all you need.

There's also Google Pages (a Google will point you in the direction) - haven't used it myself, but it appears to let you create basic stuff for free.

Yup, 'tis true! though the overall point is you dont need to pay for hosting.

The building websites for over 50's is an excellent book written in large print and easy to understand. The books or under tens are too basic for him as he knows all there is in them. He is always asked in school for help by the teachers and became fully conversant with powerpoint in one evenning. He gets his brains from his mother not me though!!!

Thanks again Guv your a Diamond!

Here's my 30 second (almost) guide to simple web page writing.

1. Do it in NOTEPAD. It's the only way he'll learn ;)

2. Open Notepad, make a new file called index.htm and save it in a new directory.

3. Stick this in it:

<br /> My First Webpage<br />

Hello. Click here

4. Save it.

5. Make another notepad file called apicture.htm and stick this in it.

<br /> My First Picture<br />

Hello. Heres a picture.

6. Save it.

7. Stick a picture called cow.jpg in the same directory.

Now go load up index.htm - it should load in Internet Explorer.

Tinker with the code in notepad to add, remove, and move about stuff he wants. It should become clear :)

Here's a few more things to add in the code if you want:

adds a line gap

makes text bold, but end it with
when you want the bolding to stop

have a guess what these do, then try them:

hello

hello

hello

etc...

When you're done, you need to upload it.

For starters, try something like Geocities. Yes, it's ****** and free but you can upload online, so it's good to find your feet. Head over to www.geocities.com and have a go at uploading your files :)

Oh, and take a look at http://www.myhtmltutorials.com/ too - very good for the beginner, and if your page ends up like this: http://www.angelfire.com/super/badwebs/main.htm - give up.
