If a vehicle is exported out of the UK and then is subsequently imported back in, the record of the export is removed from the vehicle's history by the DVLA. Therefore the HPI Check is unable to provide information on a vehicle's previous export status, once it becomes a UK registered vehicle again. HPI is also unable to provide any information about the vehicle's history whilst it was registered and used abroad.

So from that it sounds like it has previously been exported but never officially imported back in?

I'm buying, person has all the paperwork apparently - could it be that DVLA have made a mistake?

Means further hassle and questions for you in the future unless you run it until it dies.
Too many possible reasons to give it a miss unless you can vouch for the seller personally.

If it is a clone you could well end up losing cash and car, Keep on running and dont look back

It is possible - I'd phone HPI and get them to look into it. When I was looking into a car earlier this year I did an HPI check and the car failed on the V5 issue date, I phoned HPI and they were quite helpful and said they'd contact the DVLA and found out what's wrong. They phoned me back in a couple of days later and found out it was a DVLA error which had now been corrected although by that time the car had been sold to someone else. If HPI advise against buying the car and won't guarantee the money I'd walk away as it's not worth the potential problems, while I was annoyed to lose out on my car I don't regret being cautious.

Other than that it come back clean and he has receipts from VW dealers, MOT's etc dated after the supposed export.
