Since the medicines we can buy for kids have been severely restricted lately, does anyone have any homemade remedies for kiddies coughs and colds?

My little three yr old has an almost constantly running nose the past few days and a cough-cough-cough-cough-cough.

Need somehow to make him more comfortable!

I know it's a stab in the dark, but are you sure it's not a reaction to pollen (hayfever)?

I think it might be as pollen is very high atm,

Also it may be that he is starting to have chicken pox as he was in contact with a little boy who has it now about ten days ago, and it has a ten to 21 day incubation period.

It may just be one of those colds also that kids get all the time.

I've given him calpol ( avoiding ibruprofen just in case of the chicken pox connection ) and I've made him tea with honey in to soothe his throat, but it hasn't much helped. Also have rubbed vix into his chest and he has olbas oil on his t-shirt.

I know it's just that the runny nose is running down the back of his throat making him cough, but it seems he has no respite from the symptoms... awful for him.

I was going to say that, I have terrible HF have done since a child when it was a lot worse. My eldest suffers with it too now, it is especially bad since we got back over here.

I might pop round to the chemist and see if kiddies are allowed anti-histamines. I think they have to be over 12 but it's worth a try.

I mix lemonade (heated) with a tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon of lemon juice when my kids have coughs sore throats, etc, soothes the throat and really does help.

I shall try these thank you. Usually the tea and honey helps also, but it hasn't this time.

The chemist gave me benylin cough and cold syrup and benadryl so I'm trying 5ml of benylin at the moment.

The Benadryl only has to be taken once a day... does anyone who has hayfever know what is the best time of day to give this medicine? I want to make sure he doesn't also have the benylin and calpol fresh in his system when I give it. One thing at a time, I think!

I used to give one of mine piriton for his hayfever, I gave it first thing in the morning so it worked all day. :)
