You might not need to format it.

Try removing some applications that you no longer use.

You could also check to see what applications are loading when you start up Windows. After a years or so of installing applications, it's frightening how many load up in the background that you don't actually use or need.

Run CCleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com/ - that will get rid of lots of rubbish you don't actually need

Doing a format is always the very very last option.
You can probably fix it a better way such as doing a Disk Cleanup, doing anti virus scans.
deleting all unneeded files if your free space is low.
upgrading the RAM will be the easiest choice though. I suppose you have 1Gb RAM already?

Another top top is going to "Run" and typing MSconfig
And anything in Startup or Services that you don't use or don't want to run, just untick and it will run faster

why do you want to know how to format if you dont have the vista disks.

are you sure that the vista disk isnt installed in a seperate partition on the hard drive? Thats where they normally put it these days ready to restore back to factory settings.

My lap top was running really slowly and my son ran the cc cleaner, obviously being pretty ignorant about these things I hadn't heard of it before, its back to normal now, he showed me all the junk I had accumulated, incredible. He also took a lot of unwanted bits off the start up menu, such as skype. So I would recommend trying this first, worked a treat for me.

ive just downloaded the cc cleaner its found problems of which im not surprised, but it will only let me repair 25 issues as i need to buy the full version to repair all of them ?

NEVER known this before with Ccleaner and I've been using it for years .It doesn't normally need to repair anything ..............it just clears out the junk .ie orphan registry keys , temp files .etc .etc.
Are you sure you've not got some form of Ransonware on your machine. This install's itself , pops up fake errors and faults and asks for your credit card number for you to purchase the program to get rid of them .Lots of fake programs like this on the net , mainly fake anti-virus programs though .
Find out if you have this sort of program .
