HELP:( External HDD not working with Wii

Well when i say Wii i mean the WBFS manager to be exact.

Ok, what happened was i was formatting my HDD and during the format i cancelled the proccess and from then it gone from bad to worse. I then tried to format it using the Disk manager when you right click on "My Computer" and that was ginving me errors.

Then randomly the HDD formatted using "My computer" and right clicking the HDD and choosing quick format and it worked it formatted but when i then checked to see if WBFS manager would format it, it gave me an error saying "Error occurred while formatting drive" and iv tried partitioning like it says on the internet when i researched my problem but still i was getting the same problem. I even formatted it to FAT32 and still did not work.

When i first got my HDD it was all working fine and I had lik 10 plus games on it so its not that WBFS manager is not compatible.

My HDD is a pluscom 2.5" SATA To USB HDD Enclosure (theres a 500gb HD inside not sure what it is).

Any help is welcome,
Thanks

Delete the partition in disk manager then try in WBFS manager.

I have deleted all partitions using Disk Manger an it looks like this:

http://yfrog.com/z/jwunledslp
(sorry its small, zoom in using the web browser)

and when i try to format it using WBFS manager says this:

http://yfrog.com/z/n9unled2lxp
(sorry again, this is also small, zoom in using web browser)

Try doing some larger images.
I can not read a thing on them.

Without the better images all i can suggest

1 delete partition and format to ntfs
2 make sure the correct drive is selected by wbfs
3 format to wbfs in wbfs manager

Also try a restart between these processes.

Sorry images are too small the first image is showing my HDD with no partition as NTFS format in Disk Management. The second image is showing the error message i get in the WBFS manager.

fwibble

Yeh i did also at one point use Easeus software to parition the drive i made to partitions one was NTFS and other was RAW and same error message, then i changed second parition to FAT32 and same error messages.

Not sure if it true but i think my HDD has bad sectors which are preventing WBFS manager from formatting, Oh yeah and also i used WII GX LOADER to format the drive and it worked but i when i tried to load it from WBFS manager it wouldnt work, so formatted it again using the windows 7 and when re insterted the HDD in to WII and went on Wii GX Loader its says HDD was not formatted and it said either "select" or "format" and i clicked on select and i dunno how to format any other way using GX LOADER which may be pointless lol...

No, I mean how many partitions does it have, what format are they in, are they seen in disk management on your PC etc.

Right at the moment their is no partitions and its NTFS format, and yeah it is seen in the disk management as the J:/ drive. And also just to check if it was not the HDD fault but computer i check the HDD on my sisters Dell laptop and the same things were happening so pretty sure its HDD and not any computer fault.

So when you use EASEUS and right click?
Does it give you the option to "resize/move partition"?
#14
Don't know if you don't know how to put pictures on here but

http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/476/sdc11139g.jpg

Will remove if you want, plus if you use the snipping tool you will get a much clearer picture

Yeah i dont just put up the link...

Anyway i did what "dcx_badass" said and the HDD type became RAW which is normal and went to WBFS manager and it came up with the same error saying "error occurred while attempting to format drive".

Was i not supposed to?
#19
dcx_badass
You were supposed to, have you tried a different version of WBFS manager? It might just be a problem with that.

Yeah i tried v2.5 ran as administrator same problem same error message
Tried v.2.2 ran as administrator and same problem same error message

So when you use EASEUS and right click?
Does it give you the option to "resize/move partition"?

Its says the HDD if unformatted and wont allow me to partition but if i format to NTFS (which i havent) it will let me resize/move partiton.
#22
It says in EASEUS that my HDD is GPT (Data Partition) does that effect anything in anyway and HDD is still RAW.

TBH the drive i bought first the 500gb was not on the compatibility list and it was working fine. It was only until i cancelled the format half way throught that it stopped working.
#26
dcx_badass
Half of my drives aren't on that stupid list,

I use a PS3 60GB drive in a generic enclosure from ebay, and now a 80GB Core one for £18 from zavvi ebay, have also used a usb 2 250gb western digital and a usb 3 500gb western digital.
All work fine.

Is not really stupid, when most are the same price as any other drive. And are guaranteed to work.

And of course western digital will work 95% of them work fine, but a lot of cheap generic drives / caddies combos have problems.

So please enlighten me on how it's stupid? it's a good starting point.

Ok fine, it's a good place to start, but I know loads who see it as a list of the only ones that work so buy new ones when the one they had would have worked fine.

That was what i thought when i first saw the list. I was only ganna buy the HDD that where on that list but then i was told by my cousin, hu has modded his wii, that it does not really matter what HDD but the list is there for people who rather be safe than sorry, or cashless :)

Fair enough. But you would be a bit of an idiot to go out and buy a new drive without a least testing what you already have already.

"I was only ganna buy the HDD that where on that list but then i was told by my cousin, hu has modded his wii, that it does not really matter what HDD"

Of course it matters, as there is a good selection that does not work, but if you have one lying around always try first, if it does not work refer to the list and pick one up that will work.
#29
Do a full format, then delete the partition, then assign a drive letter as before, then try again
#30
Oh also make sure you are using Master boot record not GUID

And i have just looked at your images why is your drive raw? it should not be raw.

Ignore the above where it says do not choose file system, if you do this it will fail, format it to ntfs. and choose mbr

I deleted partition and created a new partition without formatting using the Disk Management and it becomes RAW cause Windows does recognise it but WBFS manager should.

How do i use Master boot record?

Sorry if its a dumb question.

It should allow you to when you go to format it in windows once you have deleted the partition table

No problem.

my advice would be to do a 5 gig partition in fat 32 (always handy)
then the rest of the drive to wbfs.
