HELP Faulty dvd drive on dell 1720

Hi all,

I need some help. I have a Dell 1720 and every time a put a disk in the dvd drive it keeps saying " Please insert disk into drive E " I have tried several different disks and says the same each time. I have also replaced drive with an identical one and the same keeps happening again. It is out of warranty so no luck there.

Any help would be greatly received.

Merry christmas to you all HDUK'ers

does it say it with every disk or one specific one ?.

Every disk

Sounds like the machine isn't recognising the drive.

I think there's a registry fix for that... 2 secs.

You could try this:

http://www.troublefixers.com/how-to-fix-please-insert-a-disk-into-drive-error-in-windows/

I don't think it will fix it though (if it does, happy days!) but if not just change it back and we'll try again.

Okay will try that. Thanks muchly

Are you using XP or Vista?

This page here has the reg fix I was thinking of:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894730

If you're not familiar with tinkering with the registry, please PLEASE take a registry backup before you do anything.

It might fix your issue, it has done for something similiar for me in the past.

(Edit: By the looks of things, this will do the same thing as in those instructions: http://www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip except it's an executable file. I have not tried it though so can't guarantee it will work (Sourced from here: http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/582901-computer-does-not-recognize-cd.html) use it at your peril, but I'm pretty sure the M$ article will help :))

Good luck :)

I am running Vista.

Have now tried the above and still the same problem remains.

I think I will have to take it somewhere to be fixed.

Thanks to all for your help.

Merry Christmas.

Strange... Before paying anyone, just make sure the firmware has been updated.

What is it that's asking for the disk? Windows itself or some program?
#11
Checked and all firmware is updated.

Its a windows pop up that is asking.

Update.

Will only play cd's now.

Tried some dvd's says insert disk, tried some cd's with photo's and says same. Any other ideas??
