watched it the other night on bbc 2, and fell asleep towards the end. got as far as him buying the gas station, to find the real killer but dont know what happened after that. read a few reviews that said he got a woman and daughter to move in above his flat to entice the killer, but what happened next. who was the real killer??

Right, I saw this film at the cinema back in 2002 and really liked it.
My memory is a bit vague about specifics though.

What I can tell you is that this film didn't have a typically happy ending. The film is as much about Nicholson's mental state as it is a thriller.

Due to some bad luck on Jack Nicholson's characters part, the real killer (in the black car) is never caught, or even seen.
Nicholson knows this is the real killer, but at the end of the film he can't prove it.
No-one believes him and this leads to his already fragile mental state going into overdrive.

The final scene of the film is of Nicholson wandering around like a drunk, muttering incoherently, totally off his rocker.

A real downer of an ending basically.

At least that's what I think I can remember....

I thought this was a good film and it was a good story with a nice twist. I thought it was clever it was not a happy ending and it is frustrating you don't find out who the killer was. but then it is about the character as much as it is the killer.

From memory doesn't he set up a sting to catch the killer but it falls flat and everybody thinks hes a nob( at the end of the film). However he probably had identified the real killer but the killer was killed in a car crash as he was driving to the sting, making Jack also think he was going nuts. Something to do with the killer selling hedgehog brushes? I think we saw a hedgehog on the dashboard of the crashed car or in the persons hand?

Am I talking rubbish? This is what I remember but it was a few years ago.

This bit of your post rings bells with me (in addition to my post above) :

"However he probably had identified the real killer but the killer was killed in a car crash as he was driving to the sting, making Jack also think he was going nuts"

I'd forgotten the specifics of what happened to the killer, but you've just jogged my memory (a bit). Cheers !
