Use GOOGLE to search, narrow the search to near where you live then expand the search area.

It will be easier if you can go to the physical place that the merchant works, saves letting the Post Office lose your disk drive so making a bad situation worse.

Research any merchant you think about using for data recovery, using Google again, look for disgruntled customers reporting bad service, as well as well constructed praise.

I assume the ORIGINAL WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM (not any recovery disks that you may have constructed) disk totally refuses to see any hard drive at all, since the recover utility on it will allow you to copy files from a folder to a USB drive, at least my XP did, not sure about Vista as I have not had a failure yet under that system.

If you can copy the most important files first, do so before parting with the failed drive.

Under XP I had a drive that kept on "failing" and I still managed to use the original (XP) Operating System disk which when used to boot up, lets you chose to recover or install again.

I know you say it refuses to recognise the HDD, but so did mine WHEN TRYING TO INSTALL.

Of course installing the operating systemm again WILL WIPE OUT YOUR DATA anyway so chose the correct recovery option.

The clicking usually signifies a hardware fault with the disk and could prove difficult to recover with software.

Have you another Mac at hand or PC? If you hold down T on startup you should put the Mac in target mode, you can then hook this up to another machine and see if the disk shows up there. If a disk simply won't mount then it's looking ominous.

if its hardware failure there is not much you can do, depending if its worth it there are some specialist shops that ofer this sort of data recovery but its not cheap.

just a hard lesson on the importance of backing up

Yeah disk platter based recovery is very expensive, you're looking at around a grand a disk last time I checked. The reason it is so expensive is their use of dust free labs and specialist equipment, all cost a fortune to set up. you won't find this service being offered at the local PC shop.

Thanks to all - Had a quote of 200-400 plus vat for data recovery!

Is that using the correct facilities as I outlined above. You get a lot of companies who try to pass off a software solution as doing a hardware one if they can do it with software. If they can't do it the software way then they'll send it back saying it can't be done. If it can be done with software you shouldn't be paying more than £100 I'd say. Beware of some data recovery companies.

If it was software recoverable I would only charge you about £50 if you was a friend of a friend for example, see if you know anyone who knows anyone...
