Help - how can I get my HDD to record the digital channel on my new telly!

I'd really appreciate some help, as I'm rapidly going bonkers. I've just updated my analogue telly and freeview box with a Sony digital telly, but I cannot set my Pioneer HDD/DVD recorder to record the digital channel. I'd managed to do it with my old system of telly + freeview box so in theory this should be easier as it's only connected to the TV. I've downloaded all the channels on to the recorder via the telly, but it will only record the analogue channels. I'm pretty sure I've connected everything correctly as I can record the digital channel straight from the telly with the 'record what's on TV' button, but I cannot find a way of setting the timer to record the digital channel. I've asked everyone I know who has a digital telly, many who have more technological skills than I have, but no one's found a way of doing it. I'm usually quite competent at this sort of thing, but I obviously need the help of a technological genius. Thanks in advance for any help!

Do you have to do it through AV1 or AV2 (this is an educated guess (or uneducated if it doesn't work :whistling: )

Hi, yes I've tried it through AV1 and AV2, but I just get a black screen, thanks anyway!

That's because you had a Freeview box in the equation, outputting a signal into the HDD/DVD Recorder.

If you now have a Digital TV, this is not outputting anything, it'll only have inputs.

In otherwords, if the HDD/DVD Recorder does not have a Digital Tuner in it, you won't be able to record Freeview without a Set Top Box (sorry).

Hi Browni, thanks for that, but it does have a smartlink terminal and in the manual it says '21-pin connector (CENELEC standard) including audio/video input, RGB input, selectable audio/video output and SMARTLINK interface'. I thought this meant that it would send a digital channel to the recorder but obviously I haven't found out how to 'select' it. Thanks again.

You bought a Sony and you're now surprised it doesn't do what you expected it to???? Astounding

Joking aside, if you've still got it, plug your old freeview box into the recorder and use that.

My BUSH TV menu allows you to choose the output from av2 scart socket, mine is set for Freeview so my analogue DVD recorder now records freeview. I wonder whether this facility is on the SONY?

I've finally sorted it, so just in case anyone has the same problem, this is what you do. You have to connect the scart lead from the AV2 output/input on the telly to the AV2 output/input on the recorder, not the one that says TV connector. You then set the input/output on both menus. This means that whenever you use the recorder you have to switch to AV2. I hope this saves someone some time! Happy New Year. :-D

Does the tv have to be on all the time to record, and can you watch 1 freeview channel whilst recording another?

Hi Shengis, no just as when using a freeview box, you can't watch one freeview channel whilst recording another, you can record a digital channel whilst watching an analogue channel and vice versa. According to the manual (I haven't tried it yet,) you have to leave the telly on or on standby if recording the digital channel.
