Help:- how to line a garden box

We've been planting flowers etc and now hubby has decided he's gonna make a box from garden decking to put on the decking and we'll fill it with flowers and the like, i've been looking for lining to put inside before the compost but it's sooo expensive...has anyone any idea's on wot else we could use???

I use the empty compost bag or thick bin bags.Given this tip by a neighbour and never had any problems.Also make drainage holes to allow the water to escape and put broken pots or stone in so the drainage holes do not become blocked.Hope this helps.

I'm not sure why you want to line the box. If the decking is good quality, which I assume it is, then the box doesn't need lining and lining it will reduce the drainage and you could end up with a bit of a soggy mess. In fact you will probably need to drill in some holes, mix vermiculite in with your compost (with added John Innes) and have grit at the bottom of your box to help with that anyway.
If you want to protect the decking below, then use any impermeable stong plastic underneath the box.
