Hi all -

So as title - I've got Adware/Spyware! Think I downloaded something dodgy and basically I've got random 'pop ups' saying I've got adware and spyware and stuff..and giving me links to places to download programs to get rid of this ..they are blatently fake - (but theyve tried to disguise it so that a computer beginner would be well alarmed and downloed from these links)..anyway, its added an extra toolbar to my IE - that has 'remove popups', 'scan spyware', security test' etc. and when I right click it the toolbar is called 'vnbptxlf' ....that can't be good right?

I read somewhere to download Spyware Doctor Starter (something)...and run a scan in normal mode and in safe mode. I've done this - but yet it appears that Spyware Doctor is not doing anything. So - this is adware right? Or if not a little virus trying to advertise programs to get rid of adware...

also - when I try to go to my task manager (ctrl + alt + del) it says 'Task Manager has been disabled by administrator' ...but I am the administrator, and I have the only account on this computer? Oh btw, IM running Windows XP.

What can I do to get rid of this? Someone help!!!!!

Download Spybot search and Destroy:
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html?tag=pop.software

Then download Ad-Aware:
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?tag=pop.software

Scan ur computer using both programs. Both are free to use

Hope this helps :)

Spyware doctor didn't do anything for me. I downloaded a trial version of 'Trend micro' anti spyware from www.download.com, it cleaned everything up a treat. Think it lasts 30 days and you can then pay for full programm via credit card or paypal if you wish to. Others on this forum may be able to suggest other good programmes to try too!

you need 2 programs

one is called adaware
and the other is spybot search destroy

both are the best when it comes to this. download.ocm has both for free and away you go:thumbsup:

Hi

I kinda had this this problem too and I tried everything to clean it and didnt work!!

One thing you are doing wrong which I did was always use the computer as the admin!! This is nooooooooooooo good!! As with the admin adware can hack all the info as its there!!

The way that I had to resolve this was all the info/data I had on my admin user I backed it up on my external hard drive and deleted the admin accound but make sure before you do that create another account and give that admin privliges and turning the existing infected account into a standard user and delete it.

Thats how I resolved my problem to get my Task Manager back!!

So make sure your a normal user and dont use the admin user everyday only just messing about with the system!!

Hope this helps???

if all fails then do a system restore to a couple of days back... dont worry it WONT delete your files like docs etc... only things installed!

if we dont hear back in a few days we can all guess that the spyware won.... :-D

Ive done a system restore before but i seriously cant remember how to do it...could u refresh my memory? and also do I get to choose when I can restore to? ...

and don't worry. I never lose. ;-)

*Feels helpless as he watches these new programs scan his beautiful PC*

system restores a bit extreme isn't it.
If the free ones don't work, try one of the demo antispywares.
#13
I tried system restore and no joy!! They can be a right headache to remove and at the end like me just had to do it the hard way!!
#14
I have had the same problem on my brothers computer, you need to upgrade to the latest microsoft internet explorer, this should remove the ofending application. also download windows defender.

I did theis and it worked, also get yourself a free antivirus , search this site for one.

it doesnt do anything harsh to the comp... just goes back a day with regards to installed drivers n progs. all other files are untouched. its a really good solution!

Yea your right sorry i thought you meant the other system restore, the factory reset one

you know if you do this you most probably wont have access to your programs... because when you install stuff it usually asks do you want to install just for this user or whole computer... so there is a possiblity some programs wont work.. or wont show up (but still take space on your computer)

Unless you're version of windows is radically different from mine that option usually just determines where the shortcuts go, the programs should still work fine and still show up fine on the hard disk where you installed them.

Have you heard of HijackThis? It's a utility which logs what happens in your PC as it starts up and generates a text logfile.

You can post the logfile on forums at http://www.whatthetech.com/hijackthis/ , where there are several quite clever folk prepared to spend time giving advice. It used to be known as Tom Coyote forums, for what that's worth.

You can sometimes get quite a lot of info just reading about similar problems in the forums.

Good luck any way.
Oh, and just ignore the google ads on the pages.

Well thanks guys...Im on my laptop now. I've run the checks...and the ******s r still there..tried a system restore but the last and only point i have is no good..seems like my PC is actually dying now.I'm copying my documents to the internal back up drive as we speak...and just incase i think im going to purchase a external hdd and copy files to that aswell...then wipe my pc clean. i think thats the safest option...anyone got a better idea? thanks for all quik help.......

lol ok I just have a really bad headache rite now and didn't realise that there was a second page to my thread. i'm not going to take these drastic measures just yet... i will wake up tomorrow and work at it a bit more with you guys advice and if it still fails...THEN - im wiping it clean.

I totally agree with this man, these 2 programs work great with each other and should both be run,

system restore will not remove all viruses or spyware. they mightt still be hidden in reigstery or other areas of comp. downl the 2 reccommended softwares.
#21
I had the exact same thing happened to me i tried all these programmes that you are being told to use and none of them got rid of it,The only programme that got rid of it was this one http://www.superantispyware.com/ and i installed it did a scan and it removed it and i have not had a problem since,
#22
if spybot and adaware didn't/don't remove it then your system security has been severely compromised and a format of the drive is the best action here.
Even if other programs do manage to remove the offending code there is no telling what damage has been done to the windows registry that may come back to haunt you, better safe than sorry.
#23
Get yourself a good firewall while you're at it. I reccommend commodo from www.download.com Good luck
#24
Try running your ad-aware and anti-spyware in safe mode.
