Help... In a spot of trouble at work

Ok so IT ran a report on me noticing my internet usage was fairly high, they got a list of all my usage in the last 3 months. The top website showing was partner.sbaffilliates.com showing 3,500 hits I got called into a meeting with two of the bosses as it's a gambling website. I have no idea how I'm showing that many hits and I'd never even heard of the site.
I've looked this up and its a brand of sporting bet, I've never heard of that or been on it either.

Does anyone know anything about it or how I could have got that many hits? Is it likely to be due to a pop up or something opening up itself without me knowing?

[FONT=Verdana]It could be Spyware or Malware on your computer at work - also does anybody else know the password to your work account?

    Cheers, Scotty Boy!

I thought it could be that but I'm not sure how it could have got there!

Nope nobody else has used it.

Probably a pop-up in a site you use.

I got into trouble at my work for internet use - got flagged up for apparently visiting porn site and the like - it is to do with their web monitoring software that will pick up a pop-up or advert as a 'hit' - making them think you've visited the site.

Hmmm I use a rugby site called rlfans.com I'll check around there for any ads now.

So what happened with yours, did you manage to get out of it after you found out what had happened?

Does your browser at work not block pop-ups - that might explain?

Otherwise, as I said above, it's probably an embedded advert in a site you visit. Either that or you have malware.

good luck ,at least now you only have to explain why youve hit the rugby site 3500 times and not a betting site.......seems odd that they allow 1 but not the other?

They'll then do you for looking at a Rugby site............you can't win.

    Blame the office gimp.

The problem with web monitoring software is that it doesn't always give the right picture, adverts can be problematic because they make it look like there's a lot more hits than there actually is. To give an actual example, say an employee comes into work and opens up a couple of news pages then has a quick look and minimises them to get on with their work. During their breaks they maximise the pages, read any updates then minimise them again. If there were ads on the webpages it looks like this employee has actually spent the entire day browsing the internet as the ads often cycle round so it's different sites the ads are grabbing data from and as they're frequently refreshing they look like the employee is always browsing.

It should be possible to show that the ads are generating all the hits as the web monitoring software should show your genuine clicks through the site that's hosting the ads. Make sure you only keep your browser open when actively using it and close it at all other times.

    Thanks for the tip John.
Until now, I used to keep about 3 browsers open for HUKD, eBay etc.. , plus, we use the archaic system known as Windows 2000.
I shall now only use one browser window, and close it when I am done with it. I know I'll get my collar felt before too long. Impending doom.

Also if they were to discipline your for that you would hope that any IT department that had the facility to report usage would block sites such as gambling anyway!

Good luck - I know from experience that the reports can be misleading

I had a mate who got in trouble for the sorta same thing and his problem was the site he was on he didnt log outta it when he finished work and had turned comp off, something to do with there server keeps refreshing the page 1000 times a day so it made it look like he was on the site all day but hadnt been. The dodgy thing is it was a cannabis site so it kept flagging up cannabis cultivation lol anyways good luck.

    hmmm.

in these current times I would suggest your company is trying to filter down its workforce without having to pay redundancy money. If you are part of a union then contact your representative immediately. Otherwise I would recommend contacting acas.

Keep in mind if you have legal cover on your house insurance you will be able to get legal representation to help you through this.

I would start looking for a new job though if I was you.....sorry mate

Hopefully it should be fine if you explain it, I'd hope your IT guys would be able to work out what sites you were actually going to and which ones were just automated ads.
