I moved out end of August 2007 as I was starting uni.

I owed about £30 and paid this off and I used around £5-£8 a week electric at the time(sharing with a friend so not bad)

Just had a phone call from Scottish Gas saying I owe about £860 and im on the verge of being cut off and I said I havent lived there since August 2007 and she said im liable since I never closed the account when I know I gave them notice and did when I paid last bill!

I reckon the new tenants have just gone crazy but then why didnt Scottish Gas do a meter reading?

Get a letter from the landlord to prove that you moved when you said you did. If you fax this to them that should be the proof that they need. You could even give them the landlords contact details and let them chase him for the dough.

they're just trying to scare you into paying. Tell them you have no intention of paying the bill, they will threaten legal proceedings, then they'll serve a letter before claim detailing the dates and amounts, you'll be able to show the dates you left the property and they wont have a leg to stand on

I have proof of when I moved to new address i,e tenancy agreement and can get a letter from the landlord I stayed at then so thats no prob but left on bad terms with last landlord.

Similar problem I am having. Moved out of my property and gave my supplier new details. The new tenant set another account up in my name with a different supplier. After the costly winter period passed, they registered as having just moved into the property.
Company had to put a trace on me to my new address demanding money - have received legal letters and all sorts. Tried to sort it out over the phone when you think you have cracked it, another letter comes through demanding payment. At the stage where I am just ignoring, as I know the debt has nothing to do with me.
Hope that it gets sorted soon but definately would suggest sending in copies of your tenancy and keep any letters you have. I would avoid having phone conversations with them, as they always deny that you have called.

Do you have proof the current gas meter reading isnt the same as you had left it on your last day?

Why on earth didnt you notify the gas company you were moving out if the bills are in your name?

(PS can we expect further threads for Telephone, electric, water, sky etc etc?)

its electric, not gas we are talking about?

Anyway, you should have provided them with a final reading on the leaving date and received and settled a final bill. Did this occur?

So you have no written proof you vacated the old flat and that the keys were handed back?

Do you have written proof that you gace Scot Gas final meter readings?

Sounds like a caes of dodgy old landlord and dodgy tennants in your old flat.

Seen this first hant with neighbours - they know all the tricks so you must be one step ahead of them....

Yes, off to the CAB immediately.
You do have some bad luck don't you?
#12
wow, i hope youdid a final meter reading and then requested a final bill and paid that off. Not to sure where you stand in getting out of it if you didnt do this. good luck.

oh dear no final meter reading and not cancelling the contract, thats a big bill you gonna have to pay mate!

well we live n learn eh

but what an expensive lesson!!!!!!

oh yeah its not scottish gas' responsibility to take a meter reading its yours as its your responsibility and your bill you gonna receive

I found it so hard moving into my first place with mates, none of us knew about how all the bills are settled, paid, same case when moving out. Always having to ask other people what we're supposed to be doing, they should teach this stuff at a night school or something. Now have my own house so accustomed to telling Scottish Power where to go with their door to door salesman.

just bin it for now, at least then they will cut the new tenants off lol
